Pepper spray: US campus police suspended

Re: UC Berkley: Police use excessive force

This is another video of the same. So you don't have to leave the site.

Re: UC Berkley: Police use excessive force

Pretty sure that UC Davis and UC Berkley are different schools

Re: UC Berkley: Police use excessive force

Shouldn't we wait to see what the investigation of this incident turns out to be? I mean, the use of a snippet in time really doesn't show the picture.

Re: UC Berkley: Police use excessive force

Well that's pretty much what government thinks of protest rights.

Unless those kids were preventing a rescue vehicle from doing its job, that looked like a peaceful protest. The school administrator did call the police in, but even she is reprimanding their reaction.

BTW, the kids shouting "shame on you" were pretty f'n dumb. You won't stop government crack down on rights and expression thereof by shouting "shame on you" when those rights are violated.

So, when protesters are told to disburse, and then surround the police, they should be able to do that?

Since they were told to disburse, and then surrounded the police, can I assume then that you are not in favor of the policemen having the right to protect themselves?

I am pretty sure that's not what happened at all, lol. I think you'll see that some of them may sue, and some of those officers will be reprimanded, which will be justice served. Every time something like this happens, there is a group that always stands by the officers, which is fine, but in real life the correct measures are taken through tort.

Yeah....I'm sure they had a lot to fear from people yelling "shame at you!" while they were pepper spraying and arresting others. Please, the crowd was as nonthreatening as it could be, a bunch of *****, hippie kids who couldn't commit to actual action of their lives depended on it. Don't try to play this up as anything more than what it was.

Yes, people should be able to peacefully protest on public property. From the news articles, it seems that the police elevated the tension there, not the protestors.

Protect themselves? You perceived that the police were in danger? You are kidding me right?

Are you suggesting that you are threatened by people who sit on the ground with their arms locked?

If your idea of "protecting yourself" is inciting an already agitated crowd that is surrounding you by pepper spraying nonviolent students who are sitting on the ground in front of you then I worry for your capacity of self preservation.

UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza said that police used the pepper spray after they were surrounded and said protesters were warned beforehand that force would be used if they didn’t move.

The police have a job to do, and gave warning that the spray would be used, then they were surrounded. The protesters got not only what they deserved in this case, but were warned beforehand, and you just go ahead and surround a police officer and see what you get. That can be construed as a threat.

And I worry for dumb ass students that can not understand that they are told to disburse, and then surround police and think that is ok, or that it is going to end well for them...Maybe they wanted to get sprayed that is why they defied the order.

Oh, you always do what you are told? Are you telling me these hippies have more backbone than you? Damn.

Re: UC Berkley: Police use excessive force

Absolutely not. It isn't important what I perceive here. Only what took place, and as I showed, they were told to disburse or spray would be used, they refused, and surrounded police. Not a smart move unless that is the outcome you want to happen.

How did the people who were sitting on the ground in front of the police, "surround them"? You do realize how absurd your comments are coming across, right? If the police officers had used the pepper spray on the people who were standing and surrounding them, then you may have had a point, but using it on people who were sitting in a completely passive manner is not "surrounding officers" no matter how you try to spin it. You are willfully trying to justify the actions of the police officers by claiming they acted in the interest of their own protection, and yet there was no discernible threat from the people sitting on the ground. Please tell me how they were being threatening?

They were told to disburse, and the crowd, those of whom these jack asses were a part of defied the order. They were informed that force would be used, they sat, and got sprayed....I don't feel sorry for them in any manner at all.

So I guess Rosa Parks should have been pepper sprayed as well, right j-mac?

Once again...sitting on the ground in front of someone is not "surrounding them". I would advise you not to ever teach a classroom full of students since the act of them sitting in front of you would apparently be a threat to your well being.

Not a good analogy at all. The civil rights movement was truly a peaceful movement. This one is not.

That woman was threatening the hell out of that officer! She was obviously surrounding him by sitting there and was a major threat to his well being!
