OWS police should strike for more pay

The average police officer salary in NY is apparently pennies. . .

At the end of October, a thirty day tally of Occupy Wall Street Protests cost the city more than $3.8 million in overtime. New York City Police Department operates on an annual budget of $3.9 billion. There are 35,000 city officers who work special events, including Presidential visits, year round that tap into the city's overtime budget. Indeed.com lists the average police officer salary in NY at $59,000 per year.

That amounts to a paltry $28/hr. The police are working overtime controlling the protesters, so assuming they get 1 1/2x pay for it, would be at most $42/hr.

With pay like that, they may be able to afford decent (organic) donuts in NYC. Or else choose between donuts and heating their homes/apts. They'll have to forget about Xmas presents for their kids, however.

A better idea would be for them to just go on strike. Since the police are the only thing apparently standing between the protesters and Wall St. offices, they are in a position to demand 10x more pay than they get. Such an amount would amount to chump change for the hedge fund managers, who regularly clock in over $200,000,000 per year. It wouldn't take much for these Wall St. players to make a couple of phone calls to city officials to have their pay temporarily increased.

If they do that, they can have their donuts, adequate heat in their homes/apts., AND buy Xmas presents for their kids.

Who do you think is paying the bills in New York?

A great idea would be fore New York state to lift it's moratorium on drilling in the Marcellus Shale, create thousands of new jobs and rake in billions in new tax revenue, plus royalties from gas leases. But, I'm thinking that would make way too much sense.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that the overwhelming majority of police officers kids get Christmas presents.

I hear the protesters are defecating on police cars and exposing themselves to children. Maybe the police do deserve a bonus.
