Pelosi fires back at '60 Minutes' report on 'soft corruption'

I was listening to Dan Carlin's "Common Sense" podcast and he mentioned this. He talked about how this was nothing new. There have been attempts at reform for decades before now. In fact, Prescott Bush, GHW Bush's father and GWB's grandfather, was a Senator for Connecticut from 1952-63. During his time in the Senate there was an attempt for such reform but Prescott Bush opposed it. He said that Senators should be able to be a part of the stock market so they could legislate it better. After all, if the wealth of Senators was just as much at risk they would have an incentive to keep the stock market stable.

Even though there were rules against his staffers doing the exact same thing...

Does every problem in this world come back to 'It is all Bush's fault'? I mean come on man seriously. Unless you are going to say that Prescott rose from the grave and is giving seminars to incoming Congressmen and Senators on how to game the system for cash, then all you are doing is a veiled partisan attack, right?

She had to fire back something -- she looked like an absolute idiot on 60 Minutes. Buncha' crooks. No sitting congressman should be allowed to own individual stocks -- and no one in their immediate family. Period. Want to invest? Buy the Total Market Index.

She is an idiot...and why the hell shes still in a position of authority is amazing....if its proven she insider traded she should get the SAME treatment as Martha Stewart

Let me open this by saying that anyone caught using their office to inside trade should end up behind bars regardless of the letter following their name. But it does give me a special warmth to see that Queen Pelosi is being exposed as the crook, liar she is.

Regardless of how dirty she is the voters in her district will most likely continue to vote for her. Many libs make the assumption that republicans are for big business and democrats are for the working class guy. What they fail to realize is that democrats enjoying sticking their tongues in the assholes of businesses to toss their salad for votes and favors just as much as the republicans do.

Well, that is a bit of sunshine this morning.....Now I am depressed.

I'm still trying to figure out Nancy's hand motions.

^ Just curious if either of you feel the same about Republican congress people who own stock, or is it just your Democrat enemies?

Reading is your friend. From the OP's very first sentence

What Pelosi is doing is not illegal any more then what Boehner is doing. I don't have the numbers of senators or congress people that are involved in insider trading. I will say it again Wall Street is nothing more then an opportunity for the rich to steal from the poor and middle class. Wall Street needs to be shut down and fully investigated until regulations can be put in place to ensure that it serves the purpose it was intended to serve

And what purpose is that?

Just illegal for everyone else to engage in insider trading.

Both sides toss the salad of businesses for votes, favors and other ****.That is a fact. It has nothing to do with OWS.

I'm somewhat on the fence about stock ownership, but I am a huge advocate that they should live under the same laws that they require others to live under. If it is true that staffers are not allowed to own stock, then absolutely Senators and Representatives should not be allowed to own stock, either. That alone would sway my opinion firmly to that side.

Her district LOVES her. And I agree with your point, also.

I don't mind them owning stocks while in office, but I do think they should be prohibited from buying more stocks while in office. Not sure about selling while in office, I'll have to think about that more.

I don't see how you can be ok with them even owning stocks. They are voting on laws and regulations that directly affect the stocks that they hold. They should not be voting on anything that they have a vested interest in.

Everyone in Congress should be disclosing their financial dealings and recuse themselves when related legislation is being considered.

Don't be a conspiracy theorist. Government is incapable of this type of corruption.

Either way, Pelosi and the whitehouse gang are "too important to incarcerate" no matter how many inside deals they make, and no matter how corrupt they are.

If this is coming out I can imagine how much still remains hidden.

If they put their money into a blind trust, then that might be a solution.

Actually, I'm not blaming Bush at all. This problem is beyond Bush. And that was what I was trying to point out, along with a few other things.

1) This issue is older than it seems.
2) Pelosi isn't the only one doing it.
3) Republicans and Democrats both have been doing it.

So I would argue that saying Pelosi is against any reform now is just as thinly-veiled partisanship as saying that Prescott Bush was against any reform 50 years ago.

Wall Street should be shut down period, it is nothing more then a place where the rich plunder the wealth of the poor and middle class

And what do you think the consequences of that would be?

Ok, after mulling this over for a couple days, and considering points made here and on a couple talk radio shows I listen to, I have changed my mind. It would be best for Congresspeople to divest themselves entirely of any stock holding in order to serve in office.

Hey, that didn't hurt nearly as bad as I thought it would. :2razz:

It doesn't take a real genius to figure out something hinky is going one. A simple look at income of all Congressmen and Senators should of given off clues a long, long time ago. They take the job, after one term (in the house) and their income shoots up to over $500K a year and over $1 million a year after the second term. Senators reach the $1 million mark in their first term. Look at Obama as an example, never held a non-political job, but after 1 term in the Senate, his income was near $2 million a year. This from starting salaries of $174 k/year (source: US Congress Salaries and Benefits – Salaries and Benefits of US Congress Members). I use Obama as example, not to be partisan but because he is an example of someone who had nothing prior to politics and we have access to information on what he has now. Either they are using insider information or they have the most successful fund managers in history. It would be really nice to have their fund manager if they are not doing something like using inside information.

The fact that 60 minutes, one of the most left leaning news sources, actually called out Pelosi, one of their own, is a strong indicator that this far more common than most of us know. This is also a strong indicator that it is not party limited. If it had only been Republicans doing it, 60 Minutes would of been hounding them for years. Apparently, someone in the left has decided to start dumping the negativity for the party onto Pelosi and let her hang for everything instead of it splashing back on BO or the rest of the party. She actually makes a good lightning rod for the Democrats, short of an actual criminal conviction, her re-election is pretty much guaranteed in her district. Even if she retires or steps aside, that district is only going to go one way.
