Merry Christmas? Agriculture Department Imposes Christmas Tree Tax

Re: Merry Christmas? Agriculture Department Imposes

While I think programs like this would be better implemented within the selected industries without the government assistance, this fee is no different than what is already in place for pork (The other white meat), dairy (got milk?), Beef (It's what for dinner) and others.

The bitching about this is a bit late and a bit limited in focus, if you are upset over this you need to expand your outrage.

Oh, my outrage is already expanded. :rofl

The whole program just sounds grinchie.

Re: Merry Christmas? Agriculture Department Imposes

Can we get an equally effective atheist tax?

You've missed all the arguements that the government is too large and has it's fingers in too many things they have no business being in?

I missed nothing. That statement has nothing to do with your accusation.

So once again. You've not seen all the arguements which I described?

What my accusation that the bitching is a tad limited in focus? It is true is it not, should you not be upset over more than just the xmas trees?

This article is about Christmas tree's? No? You will note that I argued that this was not something the government should be involved in, in any form. It is about Christmas tree's so that is going to be the focus of the discussion.

I disagree. He is arguing that there was a precedent for doing this, so pork, milk, and other commodities this has happened with are certainly on the table.

While you are correct, sort of, you're missing out on the big picture. Waaaaay back in 1966, LBJ allowed cotton growers to take a fee out of what they sold to promote themselves. They asked for this so all cotton growers, even the ones who didn't want to pay, would pay the government to do so, since they would also get the benefits. In 1983, 1985 and 1986 milk, pork and beef followed suit, this time under Reagan. So the Christmas tree industry wishes to follow. They want government involvement, because they wish to promote the whole industry, and need fees from all who would benefit.

Although reading up on it, it seems only 25% of the industry sells 500 trees or more a year, and those are the only ones who have to pay.
