CAMDENTON, Mo. (AP) -- Nearly every year, Patsy Riley has gotten unsolicited offers for her house on Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks with its spectacular views of tree-lined bluffs and its ample shoreline, but she never wanted to leave. Now, she and hundreds of her neighbors wonder what will become of their homes after a federal agency declared that many structures built close to the lake may have to go.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, citing restrictions on private developments around dams, says thousands of residences, decks, patios and boathouses appear to encroach on land belonging to the hydroelectric project in violation of federal regulations.

News from The Associated Press

Ah, Kelo on steroids by Obama administration. Listen, the Power company says that these structures have no bearing on their operation, nor do they pose any safety risk. Yet, regulators press forward to take these peoples homes.

Does anyone ever really own their home anymore?

And what happens when after these people move big buisnesses suddenly start popping up along these shore lines?

I think it may depend on which politicians palms they grease.

If the houses violate zoning laws and regulations then they are illegal and have to be removed. Tough luck.

I bet that's what Stalin said about the famine in the Ukraine.

That should be the problem of the people that APPROVED the BUILDING of those houses, in the first place.

Honestly, do you think people can just build a house...anywhere, without a government inspector checking it out first?

You own NOTHING that you pay taxes on.

Stalin was concerned about house zoning laws?

No, he was concerend about his political agenda. I'm seeing a political agenda here; seems there's a treehugger some where in the government that doesn't like people living to close to the lake and now--after 30 years--they want to force these people out of their homes.

I see another Republican campaign ad in the making.

I would say he was just a paranoid mad man concerned about consolidating all power into this hands...

What political agenda?
The political agenda of moving peoples homes because of pre-existing laws? How is that all a political agenda?

I agree its bull****... But trying to pinn it on the "democrats or a political agenda" is kinda looney...

Well, there's no way this won't get pinned to Obama's big government agenda. Sorry.

By anally retentive donkey tail holders, no doubt. The President they need to question is Herbert Hoover.

I mean how is this Obama's "big government agenda"? I mean how? Did Obama order this to be done or something?

It's gonna be penned on him because he's the boss right now. If it were some other person, it would be penned on them.

You take responsibility for the organization, run you take the job to run it. Just as **** rolls downhill....responsibility rolls up the same hill.

Really? Over regulation from Obama's energy dept....Yeah, nothing at all to do with Obama.....Ok.

So where in the article does it mention Obama has anything to do with this? Do you have any proof or is it just beacuse you say so?

It's his regime. Bush got blamed for everything from the depression to the weather, so Obama must live up to the same standard. Yes?

Who does the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission answer to?

Actually, if it were a Republican, they would wait for a Democrat to take office, and then pin it on him. LOL.

1 member of FERC was appointed by Bush. The other 3 members and the Chairman were appointed by Obama. So yes, this is on Obama's plate.

*sigh*

Of course this for many turns into a circle jerk fest for some Cons in this thread who will pin this kind of thing on "Obama Big Gov regulation" so on and so forth without looking at the big picture.

I live on a lake where you're not allowed to build any kind of structure along its banks by law, and we're ok with that, the issue here is that if they don't enforce the zoning restrictions then it gives carte blanche to those who haven't done so yet to start building whatever they want.

I'm sure no one intended to break the law and in the end the gov probably won't end up doing anything but for those throwing their partisan sperm towel all over this, please stop making fools of yourselves.

From the original article. "... The dispute pits the government's rules for hydroelectric projects against the potential vagaries of land records and private transactions that go back more than 80 years. Riley and other property owners say they have legal deeds to their land that permitted construction. The agency says it has regulations protecting the lake's recreation, scenery and environment against development... "

How far back have there been zoning laws, and who ignored them to allow the illegal buildings?

When you been living in your home for 30 years, it's damn near impossible not to blame an over-reaching government, then the government comes in tells you that you can't live there anymore.

Reminds me of what the government did to the indians. Is this the beginning of the reservation system for all Americans?

Zoning laws don't trump the Constitution, which guarantees us our property rights.

Here in America, it's not right to zone someone out of their home. An act such as that smacks at freedom and liberty; I don't give a **** what party is involved.
