The lead guitarist for the heavy metal band GWAR has been found dead on their tour bus.

Manager Jack Flanagan and record label Metal Blade say Cory Smoot was found early Thursday before crossing into Canada following a show in Minneapolis. According to Rolling Stone, it was Smoot's bandmates who found him.

After a restless night spent hurtling through the desolate Canadian wilderness, I crawled from my bunk on the tour bus to face reality, grudgingly aware that the the dark dream that gripped us would not fade with the day. We have lost a brother, a husband, a son, and one of the most talented musicians that ever slung an ax. Cory Smoot, longtime lead guitar player for the band GWAR, has passed at the age of 34.

Prayers for this man's family and friends to be comforted. Life on the road is rough - generally involves weird sleeping schedules, lots of fried foods and few veggies/fruit, long periods away for home and the marital stress that goes with that. None of this is recommended for having a long, healthy life.

Also, many artistic people are sensitive souls who seek relief via drugs, thrill-seeking behaviors and alcohol - and it is easy to overdo these things to the point of death. For the sake of the man's loved-ones, I hope this is not what happened to this 34 yo man. It is hard enough to say goodbye to a man in his prime without having to deal with knowing it was a preventable death.

He was talented and had so much more to give.

Who would've thought that a heavy metal guitarist that went by the name "Flattus Maximus" would die a premature death? Shocking to say the least.

34 is a bit elderly for a rock star few people have heard of. mr Smoot should have kept his given name, it's more butch.

RIP Flattus.

What was the cause of death? I always heard that they were pretty straight laced guys and a few of them were lawyers as their day jobs. I tend to think it sounds like an overdose, but I am reluctant to believe that at the same time.

It's still unknown. And yeah, they were real buttoned up. I got to hang out with them for a while after I saw them live, and they didn't so much as pour themselves a drink.

sorry to hear that he passed away so young.

That in and of itself is a rarity especially in show biz. Normally I'd say "OD" would be a 99% surity but not in this exception of a case. Wondering maybe it was one of those silent killers that never rears it's head like some sort of aneuryism or some sort of defect that he was born with that never showed itself. Aneuryism's are scary - you sometimes never know they are there and when they burst, you pass out and never wake up and basically bleed to death internally.

I remember going to a GWAR show in NYC years ago... the train ride back to NJ was great- we looked like a mass casualty event with all of the fake blood on us :) RIP.
