After a night of confrontations with police and dozens of arrests in downtown Oakland, Occupy protesters temporarily blocked an entrance at the Port of Oakland this morning, attempting to prevent trucks from entering. The scene was tense earlier at the port entrance at Adeline and 3rd streets, where truckers faced off with about a dozen protesters who erected a chain-link fence across four lanes of traffic and reinforced it with Dumpsters to keep truckers and port employees out.

The fences were taken down about 9 a.m. by protesters, who said they were going to other entrances at the port to picket.

At one point while the barricade was up, one driver ran through it and said he would run down the protesters. In response, a female protester yelled "You are trying to hurt us over your job? For money? Really?"
Another driver got out of his truck and confronted the protesters. One of the female protesters told him, "Don't touch me or I'm going to call the police."

Meanwhile, city crews set about cleaning up the city's beleaguered downtown early Thursday, where graffiti and debris cover almost every surface near the corner of 14th and Broadway.
Downtown was the scene of melees, when dozens were arrested after night fell on Wednesday's mostly peaceful general strike.

Late in the evening, protesters temporarily took over a vacant building on 16th Street, started fires and used homemade bomb launchers to fire M80s at police. The action continued until 3 a.m. as police and protesters played cat-and-mouse between the concussive booms of flashbang grenades, arcs of tear-gas canisters and smoke from the protesters' fires.

Both sides settled into an uneasy truce by 3:30 a.m., with a line of police facing off against a line of protesters near Frank G. Ogawa Plaza in front of City Hall, until protesters began to file away in clumps.

Of course, this in no way addresses OWS' complaints about "corporate greed" or wealth inequality or any of the other slogans some of its supporters want to believe OWS is about. The city of Oakland and its ordinary citizens will have to pay the cost of this mindless rampage, but the banks, the corporations and national politicians remain untouched by it. Today, the poor in Oakland are not growing poorer because the rich are growing richer, they are growing poorer because they have to pay the cost of these OWS temper tantrums.

The people demonstrating are "ordinary citizens".

I think "ordinary citizens" would avoid blockading the work route of truckers and dock workers trying to earn their livings, isntead of lousing around and destroying public property in "peaceful protest" against things completely unrelated to the "middle class" workers they're targeting.

A few may be, but earlier reports indicated that thousands of people who do not live in Oakland arrived to join the mob that is draining the city's treasury. The banks, corporations and politicians were not touched by this mindless rampage, and if you look at the media coverage, it is clear that OWS is no longer about any of the slogans previously ascribed to them but only about how much havoc it can cause and how much damage it can do to the lives of ordinary citizens and the places where they live.

Is not part of the far right strategy to weaken the government a policy of "bleeding the beast"? I would think that every self respecting right wing whacko in the land would be 100% behind the OWS efforts as a way to bankrupt governments everywhere.

I wonder why they are not?

It's unfortunate that riots and disrupting daily life are the only options left to cause meaningful change. Will I be out there taking part? No, my protest days are behind me, but instead of thinking how horrible the protests are I think how regrettable it is that it has come to this. Riots are the last recourse of the people.

OWS is today what it always was, a temper tantrum by angry confused people. While some people may still share their anger about "corporate greed" and the inequality of wealth, it is clear that OWS does not represent an agenda for change and never did.

When peoples' votes no longer matter, then rioting becomes the last resort of the people.

Agreed, especially in light of this comment...

One of the female protesters told him, "Don't touch me or I'm going to call the police."

Quite so. Plus with the aggressive nature in which Oakland used its force against the protesters, it should be no surprise that they'd try to retaliate.

FoxNews.com’s report identified NYCC as a key organizing force behind the Occupy Wall Street protests. Sources within the group also told FoxNews.com NYCC was hiring people to carry signs and join the protests. NYCC -- a nonprofit organization run almost entirely by former ACORN officials and employees --did not reply for comment prior to the publication of the initial article, but later posted a statement on its website dismissing the article and denying that it pays protesters.

We all know already that ACORN is and was Obamas pet project. So why is ACORN trying to get an angry mob together to protest wall street that Obama and the liberals bailed out? The reason is simple,
1. To differ attention.
2. To make people in America feel as though our voices are still heard.
3. To cause enough panic and fear that "emergency action" is required. (Never let a disaster go to waste),..Rohm Emanuel.
4. Read The Coming Insurrection and it becomes very clear.

I hear that ACORN is also responsible for the earthquake in Japan.....

Sheesh!! But what else would you expect from FOX News?

That's just ridiculous. Conservatives want the government to reduce spending. If we wanted them bankrupt we'd demand more spending, more borrowing, less concern about debts and deficits. Quit hacking it up for once and stay on topic. Jesus.

Yes and Boehner's smokings caused Kim Jong Ill's cancer.... or did it cause all the bridges and infrastructure to collapse according to MSNBC? One of those...

Fair play to these protesters at least they are being heard and trying to make a stand. What did we do back in 2008 we sat on our hands and complained about it behind our TV/laptop screen like we are doing now. I give them props for having some balls.

Ordinary citizens shouldn't be stopping people from making it to work. Some of those working class folks are going to miss a day's pay over this.

The occupiers aren't ordinary citizens, they're extra ordinary idiots.

Are we burning down people's private property in the process?

People's votes still matter. We're going to see how much they matter come next November. The occupiers's votes won't matter, because they're a minority and most Americans don't agree with their agenda.

Actually blocking **** isn't very good. And would only make people hate the OWS people even more. They should protest near enough where the workers are forced to see them but noone should be denied their ability to make it to work. But the OWS are still ordinary citizens. They are most likely targeting middle class in order to fill their ranks (hence why they shouldn't be overly forceful and burn their bridges). But free will is free will and a choice is a choice. Like Bush said, "If you aren't with us you are against us."

(im not an advocate for the Bush saying, I like "Live and let live" alot better)

More like the powers that be are trying to paper clip ACORN on top of the OWS peoples movement in order to illegitimize it. If Obama fails then the powers that be can just paperclip Obama on top of the OWS movement and blame a failing America on that.

My guess is the 1% are needing their diapers' changed about now. It is clear this movement is not going away and new people are joining. People who are angry enough to camp out in all sorts of weather and risk arrest will most certainly go to the polls. While the recent violence has dropped the portion of people who 'strongly support' OWS, they are still over twice as popular as the Tea Party.

Thanks for playing.

And? New York is a blue state, that poll is neither surprising or revealing. It be like posting a poll from Texas which would likely be similar, just opposite results.

I'd like to see similar comparison in places like VA, FL, PA, OH, NC, etc. Swing states.

Yeah... talk about beating a dead horse.

If voting could change anything that mattered, it would be illegal. Most people don't bother to vote... my hypothesis is that's because they're routinely given a choice between two establishment-backed tools that both suck pretty badly.

The ballot box can only get you so far when the political process is a sham. The street and the mob are NOT Obama's.
