South Carolina sheriff tells women to carry concealed firearms

Apparently you don't know much about Texas law.

Actually I wasn't commenting on Texas law. The first part of the sentence was in response to a poster who seemed to think this was happening in Texas; I was correcting that misapprehension. The second part was seperate, addressing that posters comment on drawing the line at "murder".

I suppose I could have worded that more clearly.

Honestly, for me at the moment, I am not going to carry a gun until I become more comfortable with handling one. Despite being in the military, I have only ever shot a real firearm once, and it was actually on private property with a boyfriend about 12 years ago. I haven't actually fired a government owned/issued weapon. We had laser rifles in basic when I went through because they were building a new firing range at the time.

I do agree with the sheriff, for the most part. I just think that the woman, and anyone really, needs to feel comfortable with the gun before she (whoever) carries it. But getting the CCP would be a good idea to get done just to get the time in to get used to it, whether they carry it everywhere or not.

I agree. A person who carries a weapon that he/she has never used, or that does not know HOW to use...is a fool, even if the weapon is as simple as a club.

You went through basic without firing a single rifle?

my bad
i did not realize that crime would always occur where there would be no innocent person within the distance a stray bullet could be fired
i defer to your assurance that can not happen

If there is an innocent bystander within range of the typical small handgun to be hit by a missed shot....shame on them for not helping out, preventing the need for that gun in the first place.

I mean, i get your point, not all bullets find their targets. But we are talking about hand guns that fit in a purse. Something with an effective range of about 50 yards. First of all, most rapists are not going to target and act in an area where there would BE an innocent bystander, for fear of interference or "being made" in a line up. Think...large empty parking lots, inside of a house/apt, or deserted park of some kind.

There is, and always will be a CHANCE that someone not involved could take a bullet. By they are no MORE innocent than the women who was about to be violently raped.

You'll note, also, in addition to what I emphasized for you to re peruse at your leisure, that another reading will also yield you the insight that at no point did I say never, always, or can't.:peace

Then you have my sincere apologies for the misunderstanding. I am glad the article went national, it is very good advice for women and men everywhere, unfortunately, some states have laws to limit your right to self-defense.

Like CT, for instance. Which is to say...it's illegal. If someone punches me in the mouth, and I punch them back, and a cop sees it, we BOTH get charged with the same crime....assault. If someone breaks into my house, and I beat the crap out of them, or stab them, or impede them in any way, I get brought up on assault charges, and if I use a weapon, that too. I had a neighbor who caught a kid after that kid put wholes in his tires, brought him back to his house and sat on him in the yard while waiting for the cops. He got arrested for assault, and unlawful imprisonment. Kid got hit with a fine for vandalism. Neighbors trial didn't even have a jury, just a judge, and since he broke the law, off to jail he went. Cost him 50K all said and done, and 2 months sitting in a cell.

I got pulled over for speeding once, and they saw I had a buck knife in my car, in it's sheath. First, the blade was over 3 inches or whatever, which made it illegal to OWN, and since it was in a sheath, it was considered CONCEALED.

Holy cow that sucks. I didn't think even Massawhochits or New Yawk was that bad.

Mental note: never travel through Connecticut. I'd get life in prison for what I normally carry in the truck in SC.

:doh

About two weeks ago, in my neighborhood (which is not far from Spartanburg) we had a case where two young men, who'd been stealing stuff out of yards and barns for a year, decided to take it up a notch and hit a house. Mr. Homeowner happened to be there and shot one of them in the leg. The thieves were arrested; the homeowner was not arrested, charged, taken for questioning or otherwise bothered other than being asked to make an incident report.

The only criticism the community had for the homeowner was that he should aim a little higher next time. :)

That'd be York?

Politicians who make laws like that might well need shooting

Too quick. They need something more creative that will make the next jackass think twice.

In CT, if you have a bat, but no ball and glove to accompany it, it's a ticket, for a weapon. If the tire iron is not in your trunk, but, say, under the back seat or something, ticket. I had a coworker get pulled over, and fined for having a box cutter in his car. The blade retracts; concealed weapon. He had that thrown out, on account of me, telling the officer over the phone that he needs that for his job....which he did. It blew my mind.

I tend to agree. But it'll never happen. The people that make these laws do so with the full backing and applause of their constituents. These idiots don't realize till much, much later that hey, maybe this SOUNDED good on TV, but in practice, this law SUCKS.

Personally, I'm all for a few public executions of people that commit scandals and such, raking in millions and billions while in office in the form of kick backs, and future high paid positions within the companies they assist with their regulations and laws passed. Kill them, in the street, drag them behind a horse, I don't care, and do it on video, post it, let it go viral, for all to see.

Sic semper tyrannis

Unreal. That's like London or something. I wouldn't live there.

Hell I won't even go THROUGH there now that I know that...

That is absolutely ridiculous. I travel with my tire tools out because it's too much of a hassle to put the kit back, I usually have my .40cal with me and under Louisiana law the vehicle is an extension of your home, perfectly legal, and I have been known to have a bat on me from going to a pick up "home run derby" in the past. I don't know why these politicians think in the U.S. that it is okay to restrict the items people can have in transit. I'd heard from a couple of people that in Washington state you can have a gun in the car but the ammunition can't be accessible. If someone ambushes you what the hell good is it?

Yes, same in CT. You CAN get a concealed carry license here, but while in the car, the amo has to be kept separate from the gun.

"Give me your WALLET, you MONEY, and you KEYS, or I swear to GOD, I'LL waste you RIGHT HERE!!!"

"Uh, yes, excuse me, a moment, I need to load my pistol...."

what could be safer than not having a weapon to discharge a stray bullet

Double-action triggers are great for preventing negligent discharges, even if it's only double-action on the first pull. It's essentially drop proof.

A couple of points that I think are important to mention.

One is that, in any abduction or rape scenario, any weapon you have can potentially be taken from you and used against you. It's true of mace or knives as well, and it's the reason why a lot of women's self-defense groups advocate physical forms of defense.

Another thing is that if you actually kill someone with your weapon, will the Texas justice system side with you or against you? It depends on the judge or jury you get.

I think the Sheriff made good points about self-defense but he failed to draw the line at murdering someone, so his quote is bound to be taken out of context by a lot of people.

Having been trained in weapons retention by the Army, I can ashure you that taking a weapon away from an untrained person without getting shot in the process is very dificult. You would esentialy have to suprise the person from behind and subdue them imediatly. A gun holstered on someone else is often dificult to retreave. A holster is made for you to draw from, not another person to draw off you.

As soon as you can draw your weapon you can pull the trigger. You don't have to wait to have just the right grip or stance. It's a street fight, not hollywood.

SCOTUS has ruled that all such laws are unconstitutional.

The need for guns to protect yourself I guess depends on what country you live in. For example in Sweden the changes of getting murder is 1 to 100 000 and 1 to 400 000 if you are a lawabading citizen. So they are no need for having a gun to protect yourself from getting murded.

Then you look at males it also clear that they should have no guns to protect themself in Sweden. Because the most common reason for us lawabading male sweds to get a beating is in a drunk fight. And you should never have guns around i a drunk fight.

Then it comes to females yes their are the risk of rape. But their you also have other option like sprays, alarms etc. It can be really intersting to see statistic on what protective methods is most effective. The problem with guns is if they go of during the fight, then the female can be killed.

South Carolina is in the USA. Please stay within the scope of the thread so we don't get pulled all over the place

My Mother carries. My wife carries. I encourage every woman that is physically and mentally capable, to carry.
