The sheriff of Spartanburg County, S.C., turned a news conference about an attempted rape in his community into an extended rant Monday in which he slammed a criminal justice system preferred by "liberals" for failing to keep the repeat-offender suspect behind bars -- and implored the women in his community to pack heat for self-protection.

"I want you to get a concealed weapons permit," Sheriff Chuck Wright said at the Monday news conference, as reported by TV station WYFF. "Don't get Mace. Get a firearm."

Wright suggested that the women of Spartanburg carry their weapons in fanny packs. "You can conceal a small pistol in them," he said. "They got one called The Judge that shoots a .45 or a .410 shell. You ain't got to be accurate. You just have to get close."

Gun control, he said, "is when you can get your barrel back on the target quick. That’s gun control."

Well wow - it is VERY nice to see someone finally advising what women SHOULD be doing to protect ourselves rather than telling us what we SHOULDN'T be doing or where we SHOULDN'T be going.

I also agree on the note of the failure of the judicial system to lock up the hacks, crooks and thugs.

As soon as I can afford the gun and the class I'll be getting my conceal carrry permit.

Maybe I should consider it, too - next semester I'm going to start taking classes in Little Rock at UALR . . . a woman was just abducted from a parkinglot and murdered there last month.

No reason not to protect yourself. Better safe than sorry.

One can never repeat this often enough: Never.ever.ever let someone abduct you. If you do, you're dead. Make your stand and die trying. It's obviously not always possible to do a thing because one is unconscious, but if you're on your feet, die right there if you have to.

Way to go ladies... Exercise your 2nd amendment rights.

Not just women, I think people in general should have awareness of surroundings and knowledge of self defense, be that a gun or hand to hand combat or what have you. It's a f'd up world out there yo, some people who are...well not really people in a sense. It's good advice to get a CCW and carry a gun on you, better to use it as well. Go to a gun range and fire it, get used to it, learn to use it safely.

i disagree with your premise
our law enforcement system is a growth industry
it would seem that we are incarcerating those who commit victimless crimes while allowing criminals who perpetrate actual harm against others - those who are much more difficult to identify and apprehend - to remain on the streets

That's pretty much the point he was making - too much focus on the wrong people which enables the worst people to be "out"

Remember to get all the range time you can and to practice drawing from your choice of carry mode. Also at home with an empty gun and dry firing when ever possible to build muscle memory.

Jails full of marijuana users and the "banksters" get a bailout. Perhaps the collective astigmatism of the natives is beginning to see some relief. This and OWS go hand in hand. Translate "astigmatism" as media cultural control.

So? For or against women carrying firearms to protect their selves because law enforcement isn't doing it?

I am all for women carrying firearms, and in the case of rapists, I am all for women being able to shoot their balls off.

You're soft on rapists.

Chances are slim that a woman will be sited for having a concealed weapon. I recommend pepper spray that is for Bears. It is much stronger than those for people and will stop most attackers in their tracks.

wasp spray is great as well.

Why not a firearm? If the female wants to carry, takes the classes, and knows what she is doing with a CWP then I say hell yeah! It is her right!

Wow....a story from my home town...

Well, I recall there was a project to arm women, with pink guns...I can't remember were or when this was...but yeah, the idea was, you'd have to be a pretty bat **** crazy rapist to rape ANYONE in a town where it is public knowledge that guns were handed out to EVERY SINGLE female.

I think the bigger issue to think about, though, is age. It's all fine and dandy for a 22 year college kid to be packing heat...but not so cool for the high school chick in the parking lot after a football game, you know?

I think that fear is the number one way to prevent a crime. You want to make rapists stop raping? You make the punishment for that crime so foul, so heinous, that quite literally, only an insane person would consider doing the deed. That's my opinion. You wanna act like an animal, I think society has both the right, and the obligation, to treat you like one.

Such things like sprays tend to also affect the user as well. . .I'll never rely on one ever again.

well, i am living on a boat and will be sailing to places that don't allow firearms. rather than hide it or check it (what's the point of THAT) i will use other means.

what about the use of a misdirected handgun, where the bullet finds an innocent bystander rather than the intended perp?
when that happens in spartanburg, the sheriff and the community will experience an expensive payout

I've never had that problem - in the past when I've been in situations no one else is around and a gun would have been nice rather than mace or a key.

If some guys weren't compulsive control ****heads this wouldn't even be a discussion.

If there is an innocent bystander within range of the typical small handgun to be hit by a missed shot....shame on them for not helping out, preventing the need for that gun in the first place.

I mean, i get your point, not all bullets find their targets. But we are talking about hand guns that fit in a purse. Something with an effective range of about 50 yards. First of all, most rapists are not going to target and act in an area where there would BE an innocent bystander, for fear of interference or "being made" in a line up. Think...large empty parking lots, inside of a house/apt, or deserted park of some kind.

There is, and always will be a CHANCE that someone not involved could take a bullet. By they are no MORE innocent than the women who was about to be violently raped.

good for you. But your not wanting one shouldn't preclude someone who does.
