Occupy Oakland: City braces for general strike

Good for them. After the disgusting display by police when the protest was illegally and unconstitutionally shutdown, people need to start showing city hall where the real power lies. If they don't want to let people have their freedoms then the people will throw themselves onto the machinery of Oakland and stop it from working.

Talk about karmic payback.

Yeah! Down with the police!! Let's get those pigs!

I'm still waiting for the lawsuits and criminal charges for the "illegal and unconstitutional actions" of the Oakland police.

I mean, surely any day now, right?

They are waiting on Soros' check to clear the bank before they can proceed. :D

Moderator's Warning:
Stick to the topic and cease with the personal attacks shall we?

Thats not necessarily a good thing.

No, not necessarily. But I like to see the spirit, and as of right now with options closing down; if we don't watch it and wake up from this daze we seem to be in, we will be left with no other option.

Fire them all for not showing up..

Thats what I say.

We don't do that anymore. You can't fire them during a strike or a shut down from protesters.

Maybe if its unionized you cant......

Hmmmm.....well, I believe a strong, nationwide strike would be the real way to effect change in our country. That's the reason why our government works so hard to make it easy to go into debt...harder to strike, or lay out of work for a day, week, month, when you got a mortgage, student loan, etc.

Having said that, if something like this takes off, it could actually make a difference...but the question is, what KIND of difference? Say we go on strike...What would we ask of our leaders? Do we even know the questions? I mean, I know the questions I would like addressed...but I'm one person. I wonder of the OWS people have put any thought into this, and then I think...well, being leaderless, they probably haven't.

Who polices the police?

Internal Affairs investigates the police. As for who investigates them, well, that's kind of the trick isn't it? Eventually it just comes down to either a handful of bureaucrats or the masses keeping an eye on things and the masses are usually impeded as much possible from keeping an eye on things that handful of bureaucrats doesn't want them looking at.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. I would have assumed the dock workers would certainly be unionized though.

So the police police the police? In certain degrees yes, so long as they don't all start acting out. Ultimately the ones who police the police are the same as the ones who govern the government...We the People.

it's California... the longshoremen are union workers represented by the ILWU...whether they want to be or not.( employees have no choice but to join the union and pay union dues)

the ILWU is not sanctioning this strike... their contract forbids them from officially doing so...."officially" being the key work

try telling the police officers union that and see how far you get

This is one of the problems I see with unions of today. They seriously don't care who gets hurt, as long as they get what they want. This is a partisian thing, nothing more. Unions are primarily democratic; this particular protestors are primarily democratic.

I don't care if people want to protest. But when they start breaking the law, preventing others from earning the money to feed their own families, and pelting police officers with objects that can maim and kill, then they get no sympathy from me when they are herded off the public streets in a stampede of tear gas and rubber bullets.

Now they want to close down the city. Great. I'm sure in this economy everyone can afford to do just that. Solidary, bro'. You can eat and pay the mortgage later.

Yeah, they don't much take kindly to challenges in their authority and sadly many seemed to have forgotten as to where that authority ultimately comes from.

You would have made one hell of a Loyalist.

Interesting to remember that China changed course due to the general strike that culminated at Tiananmin Square.

I didn't realize we were involved in a revolution to free ourselves from a tyrannical government. Silly me, I said the same things about the Tea Party Protests... they've got the absolute right to protest and if they break the law they'll have to accept the consequences. Now that I realize that we are trying to overthrow the government, I shall don my three-sided hat and load my musket and wait to see who the enemy really is.
