Online hackers threaten to expose cartel's secrets

The group known as "Anonymous" has now threatened the fearsome Los Zetas with public exposure of its members' identities and businesses if it doesn't release one of its members who was kidnapped during a street protest. The Anonymous video is linked below.

"The vow is a bizarre cyber twist to Mexico's ongoing drug war, as a group that has no guns is squaring off against the Zetas, a cartel blamed for thousands of deaths as well as introducing beheadings and other frightening brutality.

'You made a huge mistake by taking one of us. Release him,' says a masked man in a video posted online on behalf of the group, Anonymous. 'We cannot defend ourselves with a weapon … but we can do this with their cars, homes, bars, brothels and everything else in their possession," says the man, who is wearing a suit and tie.'"

Online hackers threaten to expose cartel's secrets - Houston Chronicle

The retired head of international ops for the DEA says that the Zetas should take the Anonymous threat seriously. I'm not a fan of Anonymous, but after I read this article, it occurred to me that if they expose this vicious cartel, leaving it vulnerable to its rivals, they might succeed where law enforcement has failed.

The pen is mightier than the sword, remember Al Capone and the IRS.

Would be interesting if they can pull it off.

They should release all that info anyway. I do wonder if they are playing bluff though.

    Interesting take on the situation.

I may have to change my opinion about this group.
"I condemn the ideology of White Supremacy and Nazism. They are thugs, criminals, and repugnant, and are against what I believe to be "The American Way" "
Thus my obligatory condemnation of White supremacy will now be in every post, lest I be accused of supporting it because I didn't mention it specifically every time I post.

I'm not sure that I'll change my opinion about Anonymous; this org's self-interest just happens to intersect a larger purpose. But how cool would it be if these hackers succeeded where law enforcement has failed?

Quite an interesting twist, I hadn't thought of a drug cartel as being vulnerable to cyber-based attack.

Yeah, I still kinda think of drug cartels as guys who operate "off the grid" as much as possible, do everything in cash, etc. Starting to wonder how tech-savvy they've gotten.

I have to wonder if the cartels really care if someone exposes their secrets. These people cut off heads of police officials and drop them off at police stations to intimidate the cops. They might torture the **** out their captive and kill him and his family just to make a point. I also have to wonder if these guys have computer nerds of their own.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I think their threat is to expose their secrets to the rival cartels.

Letting them know where Zeta's kids and grandmas live, etc.

As well as officials in their pockets.

The cartels are multi million dollar transnational corporations for all intents and purposes. They couldn't do it without computers, making them vulnerable.

I imagine release of the information would lead to innocent blood being shed (kids and innocent bystanders and uncorrupt cops).
