Amid a flurry of counter-proposals from the deficit-reduction committee, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Thursday rejected a Democratic offer to slash $3 trillion from future debts because it contained significant tax increases.

While GOP negotiators offered a slimmer package of savings with virtually no tax hikes, Boehner said the Democratic request for $1.3 trillion in new tax revenue was a non-starter and gave his most pessimistic outlook to date that the so-called “supercommittee” would achieve its deficit target by its Thanksgiving deadline.

Re: Boehner rejects Democrats’ $3 trillion deficit reduction proposal to ‘supercommit

Of course he did. Any proposal with more spending will be rejected as it should.

Re: Boehner rejects Democrats’ $3 trillion deficit reduction proposal to ‘supercommit

68% of the populace believes taxes need to be raised on the rich which is what the Dem proposal does.

It is good you GOPs are committed to your plan and I'm sure you won't mind the consequences of your obstructive negotiations and brinksmanship. The GOP's approval rating has dropped since the brinksmanship over the debt limit deadline while the Dem's approval rate has risen. The TP approval rate is in the 20%s now. I really don't believe having all the power with either party is good for the country, but if the GOP continues to alienate voters that may happen.

The Democrat proposal was complete BS, meant not to cut the debt, but rather just to foment more class warfare. You could repeal teh Bush tax cuts for the "rich" tomorrow, letter their taxes go back up to the old levels, and keeping everyone else lower, to include the bottom 47% not paying a penny, and the net gain in revenue, assuming NO economic supression because of it, is $400 B over ten years.

We have a spending problem, spearheaded by liberal nanny-state vote-buying scum. We are going to fix it, with or without the consent of the liberal idiots.

any real budget solution is going to include both spending cuts and tax increases. it's as simple as that.

Have a source on that $400B number? I'm also curious about the additional revenue if they let all of the Bush tax cuts expire.

And yet, he could and will propose the same thing with HIS name on it, and its fine with the right. Damn what a waste of time.

Re: Boehner rejects Democrats’ $3 trillion deficit reduction proposal to ‘supercommit

I think all every cut should be made first before they even think about raising taxes. We have a spending problem, allowing the government to collect more revenue only encourages more spending. Increasing taxes doesn't encourage the government to make due with less. If they do raise taxes then there should be stipulations that this money is only to be used for reducing the debt and the tax hike expires once the debt is paid off.

Re: Boehner rejects Democrats’ $3 trillion deficit reduction proposal to ‘supercommit

so how much was this tax increase going to be?.. what taxes would have been increased?..were they "shared sacrifice" tax increases. or just taxes on rich people?

need a lot more information before I jump on board with an idea, or dismiss it... being presented by one political party or another is simply not enough for me, it's only enough for hyperpartisans.

The proposal was not aired publicly, but sources indicated that it would combine spending cuts to the Medicare and Medicaid programs with higher taxes on the wealthy. Those familiar with the presentation differed on its ratio of spending cuts to new taxes, with some saying it relied more heavily on tax revenue.

The $500 billion it would cut from Medicare and Medicaid picked up where the summer's negotiations left off. It proposes $400 billion in Medicare cuts equally divided between beneficiaries and providers, and up to $80 billion in cuts to Medicaid.

Revenue would be raised mostly by bumping up the high-end tax bracket and limiting deductions for upper-income earners, those familiar with the talks said.

The Democrats' plan also included using interest savings to pay for elements of Obama's $447-billion jobs proposal, an idea Republicans have shot down.

The "super committee" has until Nov. 23 to reach agreement on a proposal to reduce the nation's deficits by at least $1.5 trillion over the next decade. Failure to cut at least $1.2 trillion would trigger mandatory cuts in 2013 that many are skeptical would ever take place.

Leading credit agencies have indicated that they want to see a serious effort to rein in the nation's debt load or the country risks having its once-stellar credit rating further downgraded, which would probably increase interest rates for ordinary Americans.

If he proposes more sending I'll slam him for it. Your "what if's" are pretty meaningless at this point.

Sir spamalot. Great argument. You'll go down in history with all of the great thinkers and philosophers at that rate! Thanks for contributing!

What exactly is there to add? My point is direct and to the point. I should write a book to note that the GOP isn't going to pass anything that increases spending?

and to think.. this is your only contribution to the thread.

shouldn't you present an argument before trolling others that have, in fact, provided an argument?

yes, yes it is

Re: Boehner rejects Democrats’ $3 trillion deficit reduction proposal to ‘supercommit

I think any solution we come up with will include tax increases and spending cuts... but I don't believe it has to be that way....I believe spending cuts alone can solve the problem, but it would involve a fundamental shift in what we see is the job of government...and it would necessarily cause a shift in our global military presence.

in order to maintain the status quo, we'll have to take the easy way out....unfortunately, doing so will cause the issue to be a perpetual problem.

I guess that's why the Dems won so big in the midterms. Oh, wait...:rofl

The only reason Republican could bad numbers, now, is because they're not working hard enough to stop the silly **** the Dems are pulling.

If you say so but recent events and polling seem to indicate otherwise.

The only poll that counts, was last fall and we see how that turned out.

So if the government can't get it's s**t together and screws everything up then it should rob the people to pay for it? Collecting more revenue just enables the government to spend more and take us deeper into this economic s**thole.

We don't need taxes we need major spending cuts.
