Occupy Philadelphia costs city $400,000 in police surveillance

that sort of viewpoint is hollow and self serving. Please read this article. It destroys completely and utterly the silly charge that these are people who simply envy what others have.

Wall Street Isn't Winning It's Cheating | Matt Taibbi | Rolling Stone

I read the article and saw nothing of the Dodds/Frank Bill or the idea that everyone wants bail-outs. That includes students, those who paid too much for their home, cities and states which promised to much to the electorate by ambitious politicians, the crony capitalism that now permeates the White House and , like private citizens, borrowed beyond their means. Bailouts have been created for an entire generation with more to come, while personal responsibility is actually being ignored or mocked.

Wall Street is just another example of American greed, but on a grander more noticeable scale. Too many Americans of this generation want something for nothing and are convinced the government, or 'the rich', have the money to pay for it. The truth will hit them hard, and these OWS crowds are just a small indication of the public tantrums to come.

In fact, the article says next to nothing about what OWS or the other Occupy movements are about. The author, like so many other people who are upset about our current problems, wants to believe that OWS shares his views and concerns, but offers no reasons for anyone else to think so. In fact, the article makes the opposite case. Although he makes some unsubstantiated charges of corruption on Wall Street, 99% of his article is about his anger over government policies, mostly of the Obama administration, while the only consistent message coming from the Occupy movements is anger over "corporate greed" - meaning pursuing profits is a bad thing - and inequality of wealth - meaning that they are pissed that some people have more money than they do.

American history is rich in such actions. During the Depression we had both the Hoovervilles all over the land and the Bonus Army that came to Washington and lived there.

Nonetheless, there is no right to squat on city or private property. That is has been tolerated for a time in the past does not change the fact that it is an illegal action. What makes the Occupy movements a more grievous injury to the community is the fact that many of these city governments are struggling to provide vital services to their citizens, who will now have to forgo millions of dollars worth of these services because of the costs generated by the Occupy movement which is still trying to figure out why they are protesting. With their claim of such widespread support and the aggressive fund raising they are engaged in, there doesn't seem to be any decent reason for them not to pay their fair share of the costs to city residents they are generating.

Sssssssooooo, you think this fraud of a response in letter photo'd and pasted on some message board is written by a conservative? Why is that?

j-mac

It was dropped by anonymous counter-occupy protestors.

And why not? May as well occupy towns and cities all over the United States in order to get the desired outcome, whatever that might be.

as someone who has sat in on military staff meetings as they planned campaigns; a piece of advice.... you sort of really need to know what your desired outcome is before you start trying to achieve it. ;) just a hint, from me to you. do with it what you will. :)

It's not a pretty sight watching the country which was once the greatest hope for mankind self-destruct.

that is correct. but given the events of the past three years, I have some hope.

Why would an article explaining why people are mad at cheaters on Wall Street talk about Dodd/Frank except possible to mention the effort to bring back some sane regulation?

It seems that many people are confused about OWS because it is structurally very different from the type of top down leader led protests of the past they are familiar with. All of the things in the article are issues that the author and people in the movement are concerned with. Speaking for myself, I very strongly identify with much of what he said.

This nonsense about envy and anger at others having more money is the requisite right wing fall back position to play ostrich and hide their heads from any real examination of what is wrong. Its comforting to the right to be able to write off all this populist anger as mere jealousy and thus not have to really do anything about it.

Its not going away. And its not envy. We do not want to break into your sub-zero four foot wide frig and steal all your Beluga caviar. We do not want to break into your eight car heated garage and steal the keys to the Bentley and do figure eights on your fine trimmed manicured lawn. We do not want to steal the floor length mink fur coat and use it for toilet tissue. We do NOT want what you think is so precious and so important.

What we do want is a just and sustainable society where economic justice is the rule and cheaters are punished instead of rewarded. By now, this should be very very clear to anyone who wants to see what is behind all this.

That's true, but a spontaneous, inchoate movement is more or less the opposite of a top-down, precisely choreographed plan of action. OWS is an emergent phenomenon; to expect it to behave in orderly ways is foolish. I grant, however, that this chaotic nature could be the tragic flaw of this unorganized mass movement.

Those military staff meetings are so 1940's. The modern way is to protest first and hope the reason will be explained during the chanting.

that is correct. but given the events of the past three years, I have some hope.

I'd love to share that hope, and nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see the American people come together again under the ir previous conviction of self reliance and helping their neighbor without depending on the government. But Barrack Obama has come down hard on the idea of self reliance and insists the government should do more.

Where do you find hope these days that the American people will snap back to reality? I'd be grateful if you shared your source.

Because Dodd/Frank was intended to reform Wall Street. In other words it is the Democrats who have created the mess we see now, yet these protests about Wall Street are nowhere near Wall Street and are not addressing the problem.

If some Wall Street type has committed a crime then let them name names and have him/her arrested. But it also seems that these protesters are also committing crimes and expected themselves to go unpunished. The irony will be lost on these poor dumb boobs but it is clear that these people, like the Bernie Madoffs of the world, also don't see themselves as criminals.

Ever wonder why our politicians are strangely silent? I do.

Could be that the majority of them are pretty wealthy, or that they realize how stupid they might sound saying "why yes...I AGREE with the protesters and being upset with the influence banks and brokers have on politicians and I would LOVE to talk more about it, but right now I'm on my way to a fundraiser hosted by banks and brokers..."

good question. I suspect some see it as a threat to their adopted belief system while others see it as something that could blow up in their face should they get on the wrong side of it - which ever side that may be. So the safe path is to stay away from it in the hopes it dies out with the winter snows.

I think they stay out of it primarily because it's potentially a politically fatal minefield.

surviving , politically, is always the number 1 concern of politicians.

The United States is one of the oldest ongoing democracies in the world so there must have been some sort of justice and sustainability going on for that to happen. So what has eroded the society that had sustained itself for over two centuries, despite the many challenges it was forced to meet?

Wall Street has been there for decades. There have been honest and dishonest people, though mostly honest, for hundreds of years. Why now? What was the tipping point?

"A just and sustainable society"? What the hell is that? Chicken in every pot? There is no such thing and never has been. All we can do is try to get as close as possible but you can be sure that these inarticulate clowns sleeping in their own waste are not going to show the way. Instead they will be the useful idiots, the dupes who are always on the fringes of any political movement.

At a cost of $400,000 a week, the cost to the city's residents could quickly run into millions of dollars at a time when the city has already been forced to cut back on some services because of declining revenues. Should these protesters and those in other cities be required to cover the costs to the city, so that its residents, often those most vulnerable and dependent on city services, do not have to face further cutbacks because of Occupy Philadelphia?
I say we have the "Occupied", everywhere just step down and let the "Occupants" show what they can do.

The fact is that the only two consistent messages coming for the Occupy movements is that they are against corporate greed, that is, they are opposed to companies trying to make a profit, and they are against wealth inequality, which means that if you are rich, they want some of your money.

You don't like the word, envy? Fine, then let's say that they resent the fact that some other people have more money than they do. They may claim that they are speaking for 99% of Americans, but of course, that's crap. In America, if 99% of the people want something, they elect legislators and presidents, governors or mayors that make it happen. You may want to believe OWS is out there just to represent your beliefs, but unless you want companies to be all non profits and believe you are entitled to a share of other people's wealth, they don't. In fact, most of the Occupy movements, for all the noise and annoyance they are causing, are still trying to figure out why they are there.

You say you want is a "just and sustainable society where economic justice is the rule," but who decides what is just and sustainable? You? A mob in the streets that has shown contempt for the law and cannot come up with an actionable agenda for change?

You claim the Occupy movements will not go away, but of course, they will. Here in Philadelphia, the Occupy people yesterday marched 2 miles through wind and cold and snow to a planned rally at Temple University at which Bill Clinton and two local left wing politicians had promised to speak, but when Occupy got there, they learned that neither Clinton nor the local politicians were going to show up. The politicians claimed the bad weather prevented them from showing up, but traffic was running well and their limousines would have been dry and well heated. What was clear is that liberal and left wing politicians who recently wanted to be identified with this Occupy movement are now trying to distance themselves from it.

Where did I say it written by a conservative? I mentioned the mode of thinking goes hand and hand with Ayn Rand and that turd called Atlas Shrugged.

Good God! Why is it that libs think that they are sooooo clever by trying to use thinly veiled inference as deception? Now at the risk of you magically choosing now to log off, or move to another part of the board, why don't you fully, and clearly explain who it was you were attacking then. Oh, and try and appear like you attempting a genuine answer please....thx.

Sorry Mickey, bad analogy. Fees, and permit hurdles in your mind are only for those that don't promote the message you agree with?

j-mac
No, I don't think that the Tea Party should have paid either. The message doesn't matter. The groups aren't forming a St. Paddy's Parade, they are protesting.

So either charge the Occupy rally equally, or refund the Tea parties that already paid, right?

j-mac

This was dropped on the Occupy protestors in Chicago.

Such cockiness. There isn't a single Wall Streeter that can do my job. Let their fat asses fall where they may. They think they are going to waltz into 85K jobs in the private sector? They can't even account for themselves.
