Chemical bomb tossed into Occupy Maine encampment

It wasn't a shot at you, you don't strike me as someone that watches Glenn Beck in your bunker with your gun collection and cans of Tuna.

It's just some of the right wing media is pulling the same tactics that were used against the Tea Party to make it seem racist...

It's stupid both way it happens, everyones going to have their nuts and I think the Tea Party has some good points and I think the OWS has some good points and legitimate grievances.

Not that I would endorse either because I find alot of it misguided.

Oh, no! I didn't take it that way at all. I miss out on a lot of the shock-and-awe journalism from both sides, so this whole jew-sign controversy was completely unknown to me.

And FYI, it's really, really hard to build a below-ground, reinforced safety structure here in Texas, so it's pretty unlikely I'll ever watch Glenn Beck in my bunker :2razz:.

Heard about a sign on the NPR today that they are using on OWS, it reads, "I'll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one."

I was in my car and nearly lost control of my car :lamo:lamo:lamo

Someone drops a bong...a minimeth lab goes bad, and all of a sudden people are freakin out...

Say...this speculation thing is FUN!

It was probably Obama or one of the dems trying to clear things out before their next $5k a plate fundraiser with the banks and brokers...

Don't trivialize the situation. What if the makeshift chemical bomb had actually been more powerful and more lethal? Would you then be saying the Portland, ME Occupiers got what they had coming to them? Surely, you wouldn't.

These people were attacked. My hope is law enforcement finds who did it and throws the book at them.

Silver metal? Probably aluminum. It's likely something like aluminum foil and Drain-O.

That being said, it's pretty sad that people can't respect the right to assemble and protest. Likely it is politically motivated, but we'll have to wait to see if they can figure out who threw it.
Yeah, it was probably one of those draino bombs that kids make all the time.

Basically a harmless prank until someone who doesn't know what it is tries to pick it up and gets a face full of draino. Then it isn't so funny anymore.

We don't. But the right wing better hope it isn't.

Hold on a second... that's not what pbrauer said in the OP:

pbrauer said:
The right wing doesn't like the OWS protests very much.

Clearly, that statement was meant to accuse someone from the "right wing" as throwing the "bomb".

That or they lose a hand, that thing looked like it could take off a hand if you had a firm grasp on it. Especially sense the one used was a Gatorade bottle. Also what I find hard to believe that it was this is the fact that it was thrown out of a car. Doing what they did and timing it so it doesn't go off in the car seems like it would be a little tricky.

So do I...as soon as they actually find who did it. From what was described, there were people around the kitchen area...and a mysterious car driving around...how far away was it? Where did the 'bomb' come from? How do we know this wasnt some OWS attention whore? Seems to me what with the regular presence of 'occupiers' SOMEONE should have seen something. The fact is we know nothing about it but The Pete has already labelled this a right wing hate crime. So wouldnt the thread more apprpriately be entitled "something went boom aty the OWS kitchen...details to follow"? And when they catch whoever is responsible, shouldnt the headline read "Dumbass arrested for igniting Gatorade Bomb"?

WTF? I'd never heard of this until this thread. The "craziest" thing I ever did as a teenager was loiter outside a Tractor Supply with a bunch of my pothead friends while they smoked a joint. Idiot kids are actually making explosives?

Good.

And that's true!

These people don't equal all Republicans.

So now that we've established that let's also establish that.

A few guys holding racist signs at Tea Party Rally's doesn't mean that the Tea Party is racist.

A few whacky guys committing terrorist acts don't represent all Christians or Muslims.

A few cretins holding anti-Semitic signs doesn't represent all OWS protesters.

Thank you.

But... But, Jet, applying nuance to things is hard. How am I going to mindlessly trash the other side if not everybody on that side is the same?

Really, tessaesque? Where were you when the Columbine, aka, Trench Coat Mafia, school shooting took place? They didn't just bring guns to carry out their deadly mayhem. They planted pipe bombs, too. Good thing none of them went off.

You mean, good thing they were idiot kids :).

...I think I was 7 when Columbine happened. I remember the shooting...I don't remember anything about explosives. Of course, idiot kids in the forest making things go "boom" is a LOT different than mentality disturbed young men going on a shooting rampage because nobody thought to get the little dicks any help.

The right wing doesn't like the OWS protests very much.

PORTLAND — Occupy Maine protesters say Sunday morning's attack with a chemical explosive has left them with a mixture of anxiety and resolve.

"We are more motivated to keep doing what we're doing," said Stephanie Wilburn, of Portland, who was sitting near where the chemical mixture in a Gatorade bottle was tossed at 4 a.m. Sunday. "They have heard us and we're making a difference."

Wilburn said she was startled and briefly lost hearing in her left ear when the device exploded beneath a table about 10 feet away. Wilburn's hearing returned and police said no injuries were reported.

Portland police Sgt. Glen McGary said the bomb was thrown into the camp’s kitchen, a tarped area where food is cooked and served. Protest organizers said the explosion lifted a large table about a foot off the ground.

"There was no fire . . . We had a good 20 feet of thick smoke rolling out from under the table," Wilburn said. They could see the "G" on the 24-ounce bottle and its orange cap, as well as bits of silver metal, she said.

You know what's odd: some of these issues the OWS movements has had are reflective of right-wing efforts . . . some are of left-wing.

I think either side could easily be crossed and offended by any of what's going on - it's not really a partisan thing in my view.

pbrauer,

Thanks for posting this information, but until you know exactly who threw the homemade explosive device you can't blame Republicans for this. By all accounts this could easily just be some teenagers who thought they could get away with what they thought was a harmless prank. By all accounts, no one was injured (Thanks God), but such an act could simply be the result of young punks with no political affiliation out for kicks.

Regardless of who is to blame, I hope the local police catch the sons-of-bi***.

Or, it could have been a set up by the OWS'ers in an attempt to create their own Reichstag moment.

I mean, no one got hurt. It doesn't sound like it was a very serious attempt to actually hurt anyone.

Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore (IDK whether you think he is a quack) did a documentary on it if you are interested :).

I saw it in high school. I was into it until he marched those injured boys into Wal-Mart's HQ in Arkansas and turned them into puppets to push forward with his warped little agenda.

Kids? My husband and I play with explosives all the time - MRE and Molotov's. LOL. . . toss in some rockets. . . shoot - that's a fun weekend right there.

Yeah, micahel moore is probably as far liberal as they get.

It would be ironic if it were republicans, for all the times they said, "Don't violate my rights!!!"

That's exactly why it's just as likely to have been an OWS false flag mission.

Anybody's ballgame at this point.

One thing is certain, we're not dealing with pros.

Really? This was well common back in Jr. High for me. We used to make all sorts of things like tennis ball "bombs", flaming ball launchers, etc.

Seriously? I'm getting sick of all the sheer trash that gets flung around. People see OWS people selling drugs and immediately label all OWS protestors as druggies. One guy does something horrible and therefore he represents all right wing sentiment (and must be a right-winger himself). The Tea Party has been abused by moronic liberals, and the OWS protestors have been abused by moronic conservatives. Each will claim to be right and superior to the other, but they both waller in their same ignorant filth.

It's a boy thing, Tess.

Girls aren't allowed to play with us when we're exploding random objects for no apparent reason.

That must be it, then. When I hung out with guys they were too busy trying to get into my pants or talking about getting into my pants, or talking about getting into somebody else's pants, etc.

Pants are very popular with guys as you found out. :)
