Saying that "an arbitrary and unlawful financial blockade ... has destroyed 95 percent of our revenue," WikiLeaks has suspended publishing operations and founder Julian Assange says it may have to shut down permanently by year's end.
The whistle-blowing operation is famous for its uncovering of U.S. diplomatic cables and other materials that governments and corporations wanted to keep secret. But the decision by some U.S.-based financial institutions, including Visa, MasterCard, Western Union and PayPal, to block would-be donors from using their networks to give WikiLeaks money has dramatically reduced its ability to raise funds. Those institutions took those actions after the leaking of the State Department cables.
Now, WikiLeaks says in a statement, it has been "forced to temporarily suspend its publishing operations and aggressively fundraise in order to fight back against this blockade and its proponents."
And Assange said today, according to The Associated Press, that "if WikiLeaks does not find a way to remove this blockade we will simply not be able to continue by the turn of the new year. If we don't knock down the blockade we simply will not be able to continue."

This is a shame, but expected when you upset big government statists with acts of openness and transparency.

I'm glad that WikiLeaks closed before they got to my secret records.

To me wikileaks has been far more bark than bite.

Oh my. What heartbreak. Whatever shall I do.... :2dance: :party :2party:

Not to fear, we still have ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, The Comedy Channel, NPR, etc., to report on everything bad they can find on a republican. Liberals must be elated over this news.

Good bye open-ness, back to good old fashion investigating and everything a secret. The thread looks like RIAA winning the case against Napster! That whole "Freedom of Information Act" don't pay attention to that <<<<-----This does not exist! jk

Ironic that some are celebrating this, when it was basically done via corporate collusion. If they can block legal financial transactions over this, they could do it to anyone. This is why money should not be placed under the authority of the major institutions. They abuse their powers far too easily.

If their organization shuts down it will be a serious blow to transparency and freedom of information. I hope they can figure out a way to survive.

I don't understand......why do they need all this financing to release information? What have they released that has actually made a difference? I'd be all for blowing the lid off of things, but I just do not see that happening. To me, wikileaks has been one big dud. The biggest exposure is that diplomats talk bad about each other in private.

Why are you a fake libeterian.

If Wikileaks can get into private government data, "they could do it to anyone." That's an abuse too.

Well seeing as how we work for the government - apparently I don't give a ****

You realize this exact same slippery slope argument could be applied to Wikileaks practices of releasing private information into the public. If they can do it to banks or the government they could do it to you.

Before long they could be posting about how someone crapped their pants or went bass to mouth, and then we'd need to have a gerbal take down the site along with the catatafish

Yeah - I'm more disturbed about how a citizen can decide to hack into their private info - could be anyone's.

You know who else does that kind of stuff: Identity thieves and other dregs of society.

I have seen no evidence, at all, of wiki leaks going after private citizens, only corporations and governments. I just now HAVE seen evidence of a collusion between said corporations and governments to shut down an outlet for free speech.

Naturally, statists in both parties celebrate.

So - government cannot control money that it produces and regulates? The power of the banks IS granted to our government.

The government isn't subverting their 'free speech' - that was permitted to continue. but they did subvert control over the cash-king . . . which I find to be humorous and ironic: in their (wiki's) attempt to spite the government the government took control over the one aspect that wiki relied on - the one aspect of things that the government can control without interference.

Who's going ot defend wiki? A government appointed attorney since they can't afford their own?

Ok, so Wiki hacked BofA, or threatened they had, Bank of America prepares for worst as Wikileaks threatens damaging document release - Forbes and we should be surprised that other banking/financial institutions no longer want to facilitate their efforts? I must be missing something here.

Those silly WikiLeakers and their antiquated journalistic integrity. They got what they deserved. Don't they know that information is only supposed to be released to the public for the purpose of creating a narrative and influencing people's opinions? Empowering people by letting them know what's really going on and ensuring that governments are actually responsible to the governed... what kind of pinko commie nonsense is that? Putting the shady dealings of corporations into the light, shaking people's absolute faith in these benevolent institutions that only care about our well-being and prosperity and it's only a coincidence how this affects their bottom line... Disgraceful. This is an important step in making sure that power and control stays right where it belongs, in the hands of the very very few. Another victory for democracy*!

*Democracy should not be taken as an assurance that any person who does not have multiple million dollars to influence elections, lobby for preferential treatment under the law, or straight up write their own regulations, will have any say in their own politics. You are un-American and probably a terrorist for reading this fine print.

the words "reap" and "sow" come immediately to mind.

Amazing, a self proclaimed "Libertarian" with the view that people that blew the cover off of secretive government closing shop because of government pressure on private business to stop dealing with them is a good thing.

Time to change their business model. Go underground, cut the funding needs... use a network of trusted people around the country and use that network to fund raise under the radar of the banks. If it's important to stay open and to supply the public with secret information they'll find a way.

I find it hard they can't find some eccentric billionaire to help fund their operation underground.

Why are you a fake libeterian.

I think you misunderstand. They claimed to have all of these damning emails that were going to expose all sorts of things and I've simple not seen it. It would have been great if they had produced them. They didn't.

IMO they were much to do about nothing.
