Enjoy your US bought and paid for slavery and oppression, Libya!

Remember Jimmy Carter creaming his jeans over the "liberation" of Iran from the Shah.

It's haping all over again.

Libya's liberation: interim ruler unveils more radical than expected plans for Islamic law - Telegraph

Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the chairman of the National Transitional Council and de fact president, had already declared that Libyan laws in future would have Sharia, the Islamic code, as its "basic source".

But that formulation can be interpreted in many ways - it was also the basis of Egypt's largely secular constitution under President Hosni Mubarak, and remains so after his fall.

Mr Abdul-Jalil went further, specifically lifting immediately, by decree, one law from Col. Gaddafi's era that he said was in conflict with Sharia - that banning polygamy.

In a blow to those who hoped to see Libya's economy integrate further into the western world, he announced that in future bank regulations would ban the charging of interest, in line with Sharia. "Interest creates disease and hatred among people," he said.

Gulf states like the United Arab Emirates, and other Muslim countries, have pioneered the development of Sharia-compliant banks which charge fees rather than interest for loans but they normally run alongside western-style banks.

Libya, Afghanistan, we help them liberate themselves from whatever threat, the Soviet Union or Moammar Qaddafi, and they go their own way afterward. They don't become our allies, and we shouldn't be disappointed or surprised with future disloyalty, or if they choose undemocratic governance.

Re: Libya's liberation: interim ruler unveils more radical than expected plans for Is

It's hardly surprising. I mean, to expect nations like Libya to automatically go the Western way after the West provides help, is just silly. They don't have to do anything in particular. They place the importance of fundamentalist religion far higher than economic strength. So when they announce Sharia law is their basis for government, yawn, so what else is new. Our help was nothing more than a gamble that they might want to work with us. They might still, but it looks unlikely now.

in 1951 Libya was the poorest country in the world.
Before the NATO invansion of 2011, Libya had the highest standart of living in Africa & ahead of Russia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.
In Libya homes were consider as human right. Govern would help you for a home.
Newly married couple receive $ 50'000 to buy their own home.
Elecrticity is FREE to all people.
Gaddaff vowed to house all Libya people before his parents.
And he kept his promise and his own father died before he was able to be housed.
Before Gaddaff less then 1/5 of Libyans were literate.
Now education is FREE and of high quality and literacy rate is 83%.
Healthcare is FREE and of high quality.
And if Libyans can't find the education or healthcare they need, then the govern would pay for them.
All loans were interest 0% by law.
If a Libyan would buy a car, the govern would pay 50% of price
The price of gasoline is $0.14
If a Libyan wanted to be a farmer the govern would give him FREE use of land, a home equipment, livestock and seeds.

On 1st July 2011 at Green Square in Tripoli were assembled 1.7 million (95% of population) of Libyan people to protest against NATO bombing Libya

Gaddaff was working to change payment of Libyan's oil from dollar to the gold African dinar.
This move promoted Sarkozy to call Libya 'a threat to the financial secutiry of Mankind'
One of the first acts of Libyan rebels was to create a new central Bank. A new Bank owned by Rothschild, just like all banks are in west and USA.
The Rothschild are estimated to own over half the world's wealth.
Rothschild owned banks create money out of thin air and sell it to the people at the interest.
This means we never have enough money to pay back what is "owed"
So we and our unborn childrens are made debt slaves to Rothschild banking interests.
Unlike our leaders Obama, Sarkozy, Cameroon etc etc - Gaddaff refused to sell his people out.
Libya was debt FREE.
Libya had much that we do not have in USA, UK & EU
They had a leader who worked in their best interest and not the Rothschild best interest.
Without the tirany of Rothschild control over the inssuance of money, we could all live as wealthy people.
We have been robbed of trillion of dollars/euros by Rothchilds bankers and their rent boy politicians
Just like Libya will be robbed and slaved now.
60'000 Libyan civilians were killed by NATO bombing and it's "rebels"

________________________________________________________________
This is what you people call help to Libya ?
Libya was fine. Just that USA & Rothschild wanted to conquer Libyan economy. And since Gaddaff never let non Libyans to touch what was of Libyans, they had to kill him and destory Libya.
You will see now Rothschild family investing and re-building the economy in Libya, and not even economy but even the resorts destroyed by their missiles.
All this war was to absorb oil, moneys, lands, invests, economy of Livya and to defend the dollar which is well used in Africa.

Wonder why was such a big deal if Africa would have it's own currency that Gaddaff had in mind (gold african dinar)

Wow, this Telegraph article has an atrocious bias against these announcements...which isn't justified by the facts they actually present in the article.

Indeed. Having sharia law as the "basic source" of law is not necessarily anything to worry about. That's pretty much par for the course in any marginally-representative Arab country.

Mr Abdul-Jalil went further, specifically lifting immediately, by decree, one law from Col. Gaddafi's era that he said was in conflict with Sharia - that banning polygamy.

Meh, I'm not going to presume to judge the social values of another country. I suspect that if the voters want polygamy, it will be allowed. And if they don't, it won't. Don't be so quick to judge every single value of your own culture as correct, and everyone else as progressing if they adopt your values. There are plenty of American/British social customs that probably seem as bewildering to Libyans, as vice versa.

This is true, and is why it's no cause for concern. The ban on interest in Islamic financial systems has spawned plenty of other creative ways for banks to make money and for businesses to get financing. There's no reason that this is inherently a bad thing, it's just a different way of doing business in that culture. I have no idea why the Telegraph thinks that this is a "blow to Libya's economy integrating" with the rest of the world, it isn't like Islamic finance is incompatible with any other kind of finance.

Not really, the new constitution guarantees equal rights for women, it's actually far more progressive than I expected.

Reading over it seems to share a lot in common with the US constitution, maybe the translator borrowed phrases from that document to translate this one. Either way, clearly NOT slavery. BUT this new government is still forming, nothing is guaranteed.

What could be so bad about imposing fundamentalist Sharia law? Its not like they kill women, homosexuals, prevent girls from going to school, punish female victims of rape, etc is it?

Its not like Americans didn't die bringing Sharia Law to Iraq under the command of Bush. I don't know you have to go back to Carter. Plus, the Shah was not a nice guy. He was an American puppet put into power who tortured dissenters using the SAVAK who were trained by the CIA.

The Shah absolutely was not a nice guy. His goal was a little different than your average tinhorn dictator. He was working to make Iran a democracy by 2000. He was working to bring Iranian currency in line with US currency. He was an ally, but he was brutal to those that opposed him. The south and westward expansion of the Soviet Union during that era made for some very uncomfortable dance partners in the ME region.

Iran was a democracy before the US set up a puppet regime. This whole idea that the Shah was bringing democracy to Iran is amusing, to say the least.

Well this is all very encouraging. I hope they stick to the spirit of the document. But I will remind folks that our Declaration of Independence declared "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights," while very writer of the document owned slaves. Slavery continued in this country for a long time afterward.

So while a budding nation may declare certain things, they won't necessarily follow them. I hope Libya DOES follow their own declarations. I sincerely do. The adoption of Sharia law sounds ominous to me. I doesn't necessarily mean anything bad. But it could. We have friendly relations with other nations that employ Sharia law, and that's all I care about.
