Ain't entitlement grand. Think some other town would not pay Jack Daniels to move there?

Welcome to the 1%, Jack Daniels!

Jack Daniel's Faces More Taxes From Cash-Strapped Hometown In Tennessee | Fox News

“We are entitled to more money from the only industry in the county – Jack Daniel’s distillery,” said Charles Rogers, a 75-year-old retiree and self-described “concerned citizen” of Moore County – home to Lynchburg and Jack Daniel’s.

Rogers wants the proposed tax to pay the bills for new schools, roads, bridges, even a new water treatment plant.

Rogers says Moore County is “entitled” to more money because Jack Daniel’s used bucolic images of small-town life in Lynchburg to sell its product. And as Norman Rockwell made a living off of his iconic images of Americana, so too should Lynchburg, according to Rogers.

“They (Jack Daniel’s) created the image of this little old hamlet down here being the place where this fantastic whiskey is being made,” Rogers said. “And the people didn’t realize what was going on. They were being marketed all over the world as ‘the place.’”

In the same way a film company would pay ‘usage’ fees for a location, Rogers believes Jack Daniel’s should too. It’s a way, he says, of giving back to the community.

That idea infuriates Jack Daniel’s management. The distillery is Moore County’s largest employer. It accounts for a third of its tax base. And already, nearly 60 percent of the price of a bottle of Jack Daniel’s is in some form of tax. General Manager Tommy Beam says where does it stop?

“It’s a job killer because it ups our costs. We’re competing in a global marketplace,” Beam said.

The tax would add about 3.4 cents to the price of a bottle of JD. While that doesn’t seem like much on the surface, considering the distillery sells more than 100 million bottles of whiskey every year, it quickly adds up to about $4 million a year. That’s a million dollars more than the entire county budget. And a cost, says Beam, that could affect the company’s growth.

I'll let them move here :)

Tax hikes are always fine as long as it is the other guy that is paying them and not the people proposing them.

Wealthy people/companies typically generate revenue off of the classes below them, then bitch about raising taxes to help the said classes that made them rich.

Jack Daniels employees 365 people.Lynchburg has 5,740 people. I am pretty sure Jack Daniels pay their workers a decent wage and are not responsible for the 93.6% of the population that does not work at Jack Daniels.

That is true and Lynchburg could be described as the buckle of the Bible belt because it is the home of the Liberty University, a Christian liberal arts university in Lynchburg, Virginia and Jerry Falwell was connected to it and Pastor and Founder of Thomas Road Baptist Church of Lynchburg now a huge Church.

I am not a Jack drinker so it won't affect me one was or another, but the Mayor was TV last night and he is not in favor of the tax.

I expect the people will support the tax and replace the Mayor.

If that's the only industry in the county, then they are going to be in very bad shape after they drive it away.

The report I saw yesterday said Jack Daniel's touting that they had recently hired 35 people.

Not what one might call a great influx of employment in my book.

When are they going to learn that corporations ain't people and they don't pay taxes? All this is going to do is make their whiskey more expensive and reduce the wages of the people working there.

If you're going to raise taxes, raise the damn taxes. Just don't pretend that businesses are full of free money.

It's a small company.

Eh, I'd rather buy a bottle of woodford reserve, honestly...Jack an me were never palls. BUT, jack danials IS an american institution, and the ONLY one allowed to use Kentucky in the name of their product, so I hear.

i enjoy a jack occasionally. also dig a good scotch from time to time.

my most recent guilty pleasure is Canadian Club. it's affordable, but surprisingly decent.

a couple years ago, someone gave me a bottle of CC that they had found while cleaning out an old liquor cabinet. it's from 1978. while i realize that whiskey doesn't age in bottles, i'm still saving it for a special occasion. if it has been unopened for that long, i figure i need some sort of grandiose excuse for finally opening it.

It's arguements like this that makes it tough sometimes to argue against businesses that send jobs overseas.

Open it on December 20, 2012. It could be your last chance!

If it was in the sunlight, or near a heat source, it might actually have gone bad...

Otherwise, tip it before you drink it. The alcohol in the cheaper whiskeys can sometimes separate out, but remixes very easily.

60% of a bottle of Old Number 7 goes to taxes? Shame on the parasites who think the distillery must give more. Jack Daniels put Lynchburg, TN on the map. In addition to what they add economically to the county, they provide free publicity for that little place.

Is this an example of what adding more taxes to the rich will be like? You the consumer get to pay the bill.

We don't drink like we use to - but I do cook with liquor and a bottle of Jack is always in the cabinet for this purpose. . .I've never SEEN any fluffy buttery iconic images of this town or anything about it - ever - in all my years of keep Jack stocked in my cupboard.

So where is this imagery even at? Is it anywhere?

And I don't buy it because of any sort of advertisement (which I don't ever see - I guess because I don't crack open a magazine where it would be found at or something) but I buy it for it's quality and flavor. And that's not because of the town - that's because of the Wisdom of Jack and his Lucky Number Seven.

i believe it was in a dark cabinet.

by "going bad," you mean the flavor will be horrible?

i have looked at it, and it doesn't appear to have precipitates.

Yeah, kinda like a skunked beer. Won't make you sick...er, no sicker than it would under ordinary conditions, anyway, LOL. Make yourself a canadian whiskey and tonic. Same as a gin and tonic, but with whiskey, instead. For an added touch, toss in a thick slice of cucumber. I know this sounds all kinds of weird, but it's good things.

i will give that a try.
