HS Student Refuses To Recite Mexican Pledge Of Allegiance

You know this how?

IMO, there should not be any Mexican students in US classrooms unless they're here on a proper visa. I canot understand why a school can't demand a student's birth certificate, etc. to at least reduce the number of illegal aliens in our public schools.

Dream on. Courts have ordered American schools make all sorts of accommodations for Mexican kids.

All of the children in my childs school are expected to say the pledge of allegiance. And actually they are graded on it when they first learn the words.

Good for them.

I don't have to agree that this is wise, legal or even humane.

And, I don't.

Mexican kids in US schools aren't even expected to say the US Pledge of Allegiance.

Sure they are. We do it every morning. You're in the US, you say the US Pledge.

I took French, so all I did was learn how to surrender. That's why I'm learning Russian now ;)

Seriously though, she should have just said it. It was an exercise in her using her new language more than anything, and an opportunity to learn more about a country that we share the same continent with. I'm suspecting though if she were asked to recite the Canadian national anthem in french, she wouldn't have cared. Just another case of forced outrage IMO.

Is Russian difficult? I'm fluent in French but Russian seems so much more exotic. :)

I didn't even think of this before. One of the places my High School French came in handy was in Russia.

One day, my wife and I visited the State Art Museum in Nizhny Novgorod. The docent was going to explain the layout of the collection to me, but she didn't speak English, and my Russian wasn't all that good. But we both knew enough French for her to explain it "en francais."

She has the right to refuse to do the assignment and her teacher has the right to fail her. It was an assignment for class not something students were being forced to do.

I was waiting for someone to go down that road.... The student can be given a failing grade FOR THAT ASSIGNMENT. Unless she was told ahead of time that the assignment was worth more than 50% of the class grade she cannot be failed simply based on this one assignment.

Having said that, she is completely and totally in the right on this topic. The class is supposed to be Spanish LANGUAGE. Obviously that means that some aspects of Spanish culture will be introduced as well, but this assignment goes well beyond that in my mind. Then again I'm the guy who will stand quietly during the Canadian national anthem at a hockey game, but will not take my hat off. When the Star Spangled Banner is played however, it's hat off, hand over the heart, standing at attention and quietly singing along.

Russian is difficult. Words change endings mid-sentence. Then there's the cyrillic.

From what I read and heard, she did get a failing grade for that assignment; not for the class in and of itself. In fact, I believe the article said the teacher gave her an alternate assignment to do.

I say good for her. She stood up for something, took the bad grade in stride, and moved on.

Yes, I applaud the student.

I'm just alarmed and offended by the teacher and school district, that they thought this was an appropriate assignment.

It seems bizarre to me that some people think a class for a foreign language should avoid discussing a foreign culture. I also don't see how disrespect for another nation = respect for your own.

I can see how this could be a prickly issue. It is called a "pledge of allegiance" after all. But "indoctrination" makes this sound far more malevolent than it is. It's disrespectful of all the hard work real brainwashers do.

I know the Canadian anthem by heart (too many hockey games) but that doesn't make me Canadian...does it? Hey, it's a catchy tune. Shoot, now it's stuck in my head...

Every school student in Taiwan learns English in school. Never once have I heard of a student being required to recite the U.S. pledge of allegience. This is plain dumb. Certain aspects of culture have to be taught, but forcing the students to recite pledge of allegiance to a foriegn government? I wouldn't even have a problem with learning the national anthem... I had to learn the national anthem of Japan when I took Japanese in high school, but pledge of allegience goes beyond that in my opinion...

Well, for starters, Mexico is not the only Spanish-speaking nation on Planet Earth. I grew up in New York; when I hear people speaking Spanish, I assume they're Puerto Rican or, after having lived in Florida, Cuban. (Or Dominican, Haitian, Guatamalean, Peruvian, Spanish, etc.)

It is beyond bigotry to subjugate the importance of all other Spanish speaking nations to Mexico in a US classroom. Even if this were a World History class, that'd still be bad information.

Not that this is my primary objection...but it's a close second.

The problem is, the assignment has no reasonable relation to the subject being taught.

That's not the teacher's opinion. It's yours. Now tell me why I should care about your opinion?

Maybe it was different when I was in HS, but there were alot of kids who didnt say the pledge, and no one (at least out loud anyway) gave a damm. I personally dont support forced patriotism

Then why should anyone care about yours? Especially when so many times your opinions have not been backed up by facts.

Here's the point ludahai, it doesn't matter how much you scream this is indoctrination. It wasn't something kids were being forced to on a mass scale. It wasn't something they needed to do in order to remain in the school. It was an assignment. She didn't do it because she didn't like it? Good for her. Now she has an F. She's not being kicked out of class. She's not being told she can't come to school. She's not being ostracized by her community. She got an F. That's it.

Indoctrination is what christians do to their children. You know, force them to go to church. Force them to pray to some imaginary fairy. Force them to believe in something which makes no sense to rational adults.

That my old friend, is indoctrination. Refusing to do school work? Lol, that's just life.

It would have been far more applicable had they had her demonstrate how to make a taco in front of class, explaining the process in Spanish.

For extra credit, she could have explained how to have an anchor baby, or apply for welfare .... in Spanish.

I learnt Italian, and one of our assignments was to have sex with 8 women in one night.

I took French and our assignment was to make love to one woman properly and fully for a whole night...

I would actually argue that this is one of the first steps towards indoctrination and that the teacher is bordering on near treasonous behaviour...

Gotta luv the liberal response. Trying to turn her into an illegal immigrant sympathizing liberal is OK. God forbid she worship a Christain fairy.

Any doubt as to what is becoming so ****ed up with this country ?

I want the OWS folks to start to protest that everyone has to pay at least some income tax. Liberals need to be brought to some accountability like all the rest of us. Time to toe the line with the rest of us libs.

Again with the ugly remarks.

Not every latino in the US is here illegally; not every latino in the US is Mexican.
