My father was an immigrant, Deuce. I am an "anchor baby".

I have no idea what the rest of your post was meant to communicate.....sound and fury, signifying nothing, seems like.

The class is Spanish. How is writing or speaking in Spanish about Spanish Culture in the world "stupid"? It is very appropriate. What is not appropriate is reciting another nations national anthem for any reason as an assignment. If the teacher wanted she could have taught them some Spanish using the anthem in an informal manner, but not as an assignment.

You claimed that you deserved some added respect here because you were an "American". BFD in debate to be quite honest.

Here it is again for all the special folks. Someone asked why they should care about your opinion. Here is your reply:

    Because I am an American.

That's why you "should" care. I have no idea why you don't, yet you posted on this thread.
I know a lot of stupid Americans. Explain to us how your status as an American makes your opinion any more worthy ?

Otherwise, as they say "opinions are like assholes. We all got 'em".

Why NOT Mexico? It is a Spanish-speaking country, and the LARGEST one... it was also at the vanguard of the larger movement of independence in Spanish America in the early 19th century. I have no problems with this.

I think her point was it's a class about learning a language, not history. How is writing a report on Spanish culture going to help her learn the language (unless, of course, the entire report has to be written in Spanish).

She is American and states that this is why her opinion is relevant and you state that it isn't relevant since she has the same status as an "anchor baby" and needs to go up a rung on the ladder. That makes no sense as to why her opinion is not relevant. Explain how I am wrong.

Are you purposely using the term anchor baby in a negative manner?

Well, I guess it is less inappropriate IMO. My question is, why Mexico? Why not Spain? And like you, why history/government rather than art, poetry or any subject the student chooses?

Isn't the goal for this kid to demonstrate a fluency with the language of Spanish, rather than the history and culture of Mexico?

Well, I'm not geography whiz, but I don't believe you are correct.

If, by "largest" you mean highest population, I'd guess Spain is first. Spain is also the place where Spanish first developed and therefore, has the oldest "Spanish" culture.
