A spokesman for the group encamped in a Lower Manhattan park said demonstrators do not plan to move, after New York announced they must vacate the area for a cleaning Friday morning.

Tyler Combelic said the mayor's anouncement was a "not-so-veiled attempt" to force the protesters from the park, setting up a possible confrontation with authorities. "We have decided that at 7 o'clock tomorrow, we will not leave the park," he said, adding that "we are not opposed to cleaning it ourselves."

Bloomberg met with protesters Wednesday evening and informed them that privately owned Zuccotti Park, where they have been staying for nearly four weeks, will be cleaned, after the owners voiced their concerns about "unsanitary conditions and considerable wear and tear on the park." "The Mayor is a strong believer in the First Amendment and
believes that the protesters have a right to continue to protest," the deputy mayor for operations, Cas Holloway, said in a written statement. He added that the current situation in the park is "not in the best interests of the protesters, residents or the city."

The cleaning will be done in several stages, and when certain areas are cleaned, protesters will be able to come back to the park if they obey the rules set forth by the owners, , the statement said. "As the protest has continued, Brookfield has expressed concern about its inability to clean the park and maintain it in a condition fit for public use," Holloway said in the statement....

These demonstrators don't know how lucky they are that Brookfield Properties does not demand they vacate. I respect their right to protest...admire their convictions...but, if they break the law, off with their heads!

So I can refuse to leave any privately owned piece of property without fear of reprisal, so long as I'm refusing to leave in the name of free speech?

Funny. I read a different article stating the opposite. They agreed to leave the park for cleaning sessions and even agreed to help with the cleanup.

edit: Wait, I think this was a different park than the one I read about.

We certainly live in a crazy world. Wall St is responsible for a global economic catastrophe that has brought misery and economic turmoil to millions, but many Americans are more concerned about people camping out in a park.

We must certainly count our blessings.

I love it. I've seen arguements that it is a privately owned park and that it isn't. From what I have read it is. With that being the case the protesters need to allow them to clean it up. You have a right to protest but not on private property.

Now, it says that once clean they are not going to be allowed to erect tents. Here is where it gets good. I'd make sure that Bloomberg knows that this is now in his lap. Find a solution to this problem NOW or we will be camping on the lawn of the Gracie Mansion.

How dare they! The nerve :roll:I believe its called "Occupy _____ " for a reason...
Sooo...you are cool if someone came over, 'occupied' your moms house, refused to leave, and **** in her living room...right?

My mothers house=a park?

No! Blame Moody's, Standard & Poors & Fitch. They are the jakes who rated junk paper as AAA. And that is why Wall Street clamored for it. The responsible parties at these ratings services should be in jail.

Both equal private property. That anarchy thing is a hoot, aint it?

So a plaza/park is the equivalent of my mothers house?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...............

Trust me. I do. There is enough blame to go around. If Obama had the balls, then he would be investigating and going after these crooks since day one. Unfortunately, he rather act like a petulant child and only brings investigation when S&P downgraded the US credit under his watch.

Its a weird ownership situation.

Brookfield owns the dirt, but were required to provide it as public space in exchange for allowing brookfield to build an addition on an adjacent property.

This creates and odd situation as pertaining to protests, because it is public space by the definition of the agreement.

The key phrase that has the protesters concerned is the complying with the rules of Brookfield, which I'm sure bans sleeping/erection of tents.

If they leave, they will NOT be allowed to continue as they have been.

They will NOT be allowed to re-erect tents, etc.

Mark my words.

There will be no offer to allow the protesters to do the cleaning.

Nor to clear an area at a time.

Wall Street paid them to rate them that way.

Just hose down the flea baggers when they start the cleaning process. It might be the first shower they've had in days.

What is he going to investigate? The government was fine with it all. They were ALL involved in it. Wall Street, the rating agencies, D.C., all of them.

Wow...look at you...you WOULD get a little frosty if others treated your mothers house like a toilet. What part of OCCUPY dont you get?

as far as I know, ONLY the NYC Sheriff's office or NYC Marshall can evict an illegal tenant.

and this is only done after a court order is issued.

tenants of apartments who refuse to pay rent get about 6-months of rent-free habitation.

so, Bloomberg and the NYPD might be breaking the law if they attempt to forcibly remove the OWS protestors without a court-order and without the leadership of the NYC Marshall or NYC Sheriff's Dept.

Certainly you can Tessa, if part of that properties sale from the government to the private owners was that it remain open to the public at all times.

Ohhh so now its occupy TheDemSocialist's moms house now??
Good luck with that movement....

But you never answered the question: Is a plaza/park the equivalent of my mothers house??

But didnt Mayor Bloomberg say the protesters can stay there as long and however long they want to stay there?
