WASHINGTON — In President Barack Obama's sales pitch for his jobs bill, there are two versions of reality: The one in his speeches and the one actually unfolding in Washington.
When Obama accuses Republicans of standing in the way of his nearly $450 billion plan, he ignores the fact that his own party has struggled to unite behind the proposal.

When the president says Republicans haven't explained what they oppose in the plan, he skips over the fact that Republicans who control the House actually have done that in detail.
And when he calls on Congress to "pass this bill now," he slides past the point that Democrats control the Senate and were never prepared to move immediately, given other priorities. Senators are expected to vote Tuesday on opening debate on the bill, a month after the president unveiled it with a call for its immediate passage.
To be sure, Obama is not the only one engaging in rhetorical excesses. But he is the president, and as such, his constant remarks on the bill draw the most attention and scrutiny.
The disconnect between what Obama says about his jobs bill and what stands as the political reality flow from his broader aim: to rally the public behind his cause and get Congress to act, or, if not, to pin blame on Republicans.
He is waging a campaign, one in which nuance and context and competing responses don't always fit in if they don't help make the case.

Even the AP is not buying this latest round of lies....

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

What is most noteworthy is the fact AP published this article. Losing AP in this fashion is like having your largest campaign contributor come out and say "my candidate is an amateur liar".

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

Just for some perspective, from the article:

To be sure, Obama is not the only one engaging in rhetorical excesses.

(snip)

House Speaker John Boehner, meanwhile, claimed that Obama has "given up on the country and decided to campaign full-time" instead of seeking common ground with the GOP. But Boehner neglected to mention that Obama's past attempts at compromise with Republicans often yielded scant results, as Obama himself pointed out.

Nothing new here. "Politician glosses over facts, attacks the other party." Never heard that before

I guess you didn't understand what Boehner was saying. BO tried to pull off the "Grand Budget Deal" with republicans but at the last minute was forced to add a bunch of marxist spending crap and other unacceptable conditions by the lib's, so the deal died. BO also agreed to extend the Bush Tax Cuts but was blasted by the lib's for reaching a compromise. The lunatic liberal comrades that run the democrat party have given him his marching orders.....go full-on marxist or we will abandon you.

BTW - why are you talking about Boehner when the real debate is whether BO is in la-la land? AP laid out a reasonable case BO is in campaign mode and everything he says from here on out is suspect since we all know career politicians are pathological liars.....BO simply isn't real good at lying. Affirmative action advancement of uber narcissists will always end in a spectacular implosion. I hope we can survive BO's meltdown.

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

Quick now...don't bother to read this bill, just trust me and pass it...really...hurry!

Real debate? I guess only Obama is involved in anything done. he's king, right? What he says goes? I simply tred to give perspective. the articile itself, the one that this thread is based on, brought up Boehner, not me. You can't cherry pick the article and limit discussion to only a part of it. The article was presented-I read it - and the author brought up the republicans.

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

I guess the question is how much worse will the economy get. I am kinda getting the feeling we've already hit bottom. It might be a blessing in disguise for Obama that the bill doesn't get passed quickly. I am usually of a mind that stong government action can usually only make things worse. If everyone especially the media would stop talking down the economy so much I think things would get better faster. One thing I know is whatever way the economy goes Obama will get most of the blame or credit whether he actually did anything or not.

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

There are those who say Obama never wanted this jobs bill to pass... which is why it's not getting Democratic support in the Senate, and why Reid has shelved it for over a month since the President trotted it out. The pundits are saying this is DOA as it will never pass both houses and that was by design. Obama needs a boogey man and the House of Representatives is it... which means the bill MUST pass in some form.

The bill had the support of about 95% of Democrats in the Senate. How is that not getting Democratic support? Boehner is lucky if he can muster half the votes of his caucus.

Democrats noted that they were going to vote to move it along but would not have voted to pass it.

But not enough for cloture - it failed last night. And the 95% of Democrats supporting it didn't sign on to co-sponsor. Hell, even the sponsor identified the bill wasn't sponsored by Reid. Just stop the spin please... it's not fooling anyone.

Congress is dead in the water until the election. Nothing will get done in this highly charged partisan environment until this election acts a barometer on what people want.

You don't know what the word Marxist means. Don't use it.

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

You don't know what the word Marxist means. Don't use it.

Deuce, you don't own the definition of Marxism as it means many different things to many different people.

You nor anyone else owns the correct view of what is or is not Marxism, socialism, communism or any 'ism for that matter. There is no such thing as a commonly accepted definition of any 'ism. Even if there were such a thing (which there is not), the tactic you used has one purpose, to avoid addressing the post by claiming the other person is ignorant in some way. Classic evasion. Why not address the post and just mentally remove the word "marxist" and carry on?

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

A word that means only what people want it to mean has no meaning at all.

Why not? It worked for the health care bill and people STILL dont know what the hell it is supposed to do, how much it costs, and who will pay for it.

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

Democrats noted that they were going to vote to move it along but would not have voted to pass it.

Is that right, Nostradamus? I guess we'll never know, as Republicans have officially put an end to majority rule in this country.

Actually, it is right. Guess you don't read much.

BTW, got a link to that "end of majority rule" ?

Re: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality

Obama without a fawning media in 2012 will be interesting to watch if it actually happens.

I will expect the media will rally around this Democratic President.

Just an opinion and an expectation. You see it differently?

There must be some basis for your opinion, at least that is what you said to me, so what is the basis for your opinion? Since the Republican Party favor corporations far more than the Democratic Party does, why would the corporate media give more deference to the Democrats?

Many of the Democrats would like to see spending limits on political campaigns, but if that were to come to pass the reduction in political ad revenue would hurt the corporate media. Right?

I've listen to media whining for years. I would just be happy to see a new tactic. Repubicalcans taking some personal responsibility would be nice to see. It always has to be someone elses fault, poor republicans. Poor, poor republicans, alwyas being picked on by the big bad media.
