I read a lot of world press and have for years. As I understand it, OBL and like-minded followers believed the US was making war on their religion and stealing the resources for the Arab world.
I don't want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was wedding between the religious fundamentalists and political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it. ~ Billy Graham in Parade magazine February 1, 1981.

this non-military solution; that would be the Surge?

Perhaps much of the money that has been going to Pakistan could be directed toward India instead and US bases in India and Afghanistan could serve to protect countries that are not terrorists-friendly from countries that are.

Pakistan has nukes, but would it be will to use them if it knew Islamabad would turn into Chernobyl if they did?
The problem isn't will Pakistan's military use nukes. It's will the extremists.

not really. Islamist Fundamentalism doesn't really draw the solid, thick distinctions between nation-states that westerners tend to do. Americans are equally held to blame for the Versailles Treaty as Spaniards are for Americans being in Iraq. In the meantime, it is our existence as the culture and society that we are that is considered a threat to Islam. For OBL, the event you are looking for is the Gulf War (I).

OBL was a terrorist and a terrorist has been described by some posters as a freedom fighter.

Do you know whose freedom OBL was fighting for?

easy answer to a softball question

when osama was on our side, fighting the russian occupation, he was a freedom fighter

when he was against us, fighting American occupation of islamic states, he was a terrorist

It's easy if you don't have to think about it.

When the Communists attacked Afghanistan it could be legitimately argued that he was fighting in defense of the people of Afghanistan against foreign invaders. The United States was certainly assisting in these defensive efforts.

Again. Whose freedom was he fighting for when he and other terrorists attacked the Twin Towers on 9/11?

His own personal freedom to hate and kill. I think that qualifies him as a terrorist. Not a freedom fighter.

Of course he was no 'freedom fighter'. He never believed in the concept of human freedom.

This "One man's terrorist..." line is trotted out occasionally as though it is something profound and insightful but it is only a mindless cliche used to promote the idea of moral equivalence. I'm not certain many of its users understand that though.
