Paint Creek, Tex. — In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family’s secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance.

Rick Perry family’s hunting camp still known to many by old racially charged name - The Washington Post

If you do not know what name is on the rock, check the link. What impact will this have on the campaign?

None.

From the linked article: “When my Dad joined the lease in 1983, he took the first opportunity he had to paint over the offensive word on the rock during the 4th of July holiday,” Perry said in his initial response. “It is my understanding that the rock was eventually turned over to further obscure what was originally written on it.”

So, should this thread be moved to the Media Bias area of DP?

As a technical term

"Niggerhead" was, among others:
a former British term for a black iron post for mooring ships, made from an old cannon partially buried muzzle upward, with a slightly oversize black cannonball covering the hole
a former sailors' term for an isolated coral head, notorious as navigation hazards
among some American stonemasons, a term for a large smoothly rounded stone
an antiquated term for a large round rock sticking up from the surface of a logging road, used by loggers and log truck drivers in the Pacific Northwest
an old U.S. Navy term for a small winch, a Capstan
a coal miner's term for blackish iron disulfide nodular rock occurring at the top of the coal seams, often visible in coal mine roofs. Because of their density, they can fall from the roofs, injuring or killing the miners below
an archaic term for the striking weight on a pile driver
a term for a steam manifold, fountain, turret or header on a boiler, particularly that of a locomotive
[edit]Plants and animals

"Niggerhead" is or was a common name for:
Carex secta, a tussock grass in New Zealand
Echinocactus polycephalus, the niggerhead cactus, native to California and Arizona
Echinacea, or coneflower, colloquially called "Kansas niggerhead" or "wild niggerhead"
Nasutitermes graveolus, the niggerhead termite, native to Australia
Rudbeckia hirta, a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae
hard tussocks in the tundra, esp. in Alaska
[edit]Places

This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it.
"Niggerhead" is part of the name of:
Nigger Head, an island in North Queensland, Australia
Niggerhead hunting camp, the former name of a hunting camp of Texas governor Rick Perry, renamed to "North Camp Pasture" in about 2006 despite the camp being in the posession of the Perry family since the early 1980's.[1]

So, I'm not seeing an intent to be overtly or covertly racist. It's unfortunate, but hardly an exceptional scenario.

Is joining a lease the same as ownership here?

This is just another example of campaigning in the digital age.

Everything you ever did, said, or had anything to do with will be brought up.

Unless they were maintaining the paint on that sign, or worse, posing with pillowcases on their heads or some other outrageous behavior that would indicate they approve or even just think its funny, I don't see any reason to judge him ill.

Doesn't mean someone won't try.

For me, if it doesn't actually speak to his character or actual beliefs, this kind of crap is, crap.

This is another one of those totally non-issues that is going to blow sky high.

I live near the Appalachian Mountains in the SE US. Many, many natural features have former names that contain racial epitaphs for Native Americans and Blacks. Of course, the names have been changed to more politically-correct names on maps and in literature, but they are still called by their former names locally - especially by long-time residences.

Changing the name on a map does not change it in the minds of those who knew the name before the change. When they die out, so will the offensive names. In Perry's case, it would have helped considerably if the rock had been painted over in the 1960s (when most such names were dropped) instead of the 1980s. It would have fallen out of use by now and we wouldn't be discussing it now.

It is a non-issue. The name is offensive, but he didn't name it. Now if there were evidence that he could have changed it, and decided that "niggerhead" had a nice ring to it....then maybe.

It's still a non-issue. Depending on how long that rock has been there, it might be illegal to move it, or paint over it, because of some tree-hugger law that makes it's illegal to screw with antique rocks.

It was painted over and moved according to reports. So...

On a deer lease you don't own the land. You pay for access for the purpose of hunting.

Well, that's what I thought. The Washington Post article linked in the OP says, "“When my Dad joined the lease in 1983, he took the first opportunity he had to paint over the offensive word on the rock during the 4th of July holiday,” Perry said in his initial response. “It is my understanding that the rock was eventually turned over to further obscure what was originally written on it.”

So the offensive word was painted over and then the rock turned over when Perry's father joined the lease. I just don't see the problem here except for partisans hoping to smear Perry.

On the one hand, I think accusations of racism regarding this load of tripe are a complete waste of time, and Cain is obviously not the kind of candidate I want to see win the race.

On the other hand, if Perry is such an idiot that he wasn't prepared for this then I don't want him in the White House either.

I'm voting for entertainment value, but I draw the line at outright dumb.

I suppose nobody cares.....?

Niggerhead: an antiquaited logging and trucking term used to define a large round rock or outcropping of rocks usually on an unpaved road bed that could damage a vehicle.

Nah, nobody cares. Typical "Gotcha" politics.

I will say this: "The guy's too stupid to be president if that name is currently visible."

I dislike Perry, but this is a non issue. It's painted over. He said the right thing. Some group trying to build a racism card.

Oh holy crap ! Rick Perry just lost the black vote ! WTF was that cracker thinking ? His campaign will be a shambles. He can't win now. Oh criminy ......

..... Ooooops. never mind. ;)

It looks like people are coming out of the woodwork saying the rock wasn't painted until the mid-1990s. This may be the final straw for Perry - not because of the wording on the rock, but because his already shaky credibility will be negatively affected by a high-profile lie. If independents don't trust him, they will not vote for him.

Perry has lots of problems but this phony race card nonsense is not one that is legitimate

I do agree. I have felt Perry second-shelf from the beginning. I cannot see me voting him in the Primary, although I would vote for Pat Paulson before Obama in the General Election, so if Perry is teh candidate, I'll vote for him 2-3 times.

I do look forward to that day when we exile all the liberal Press to Iran or Somalia or Bum****. Liberals are second rate Americans, and its a distant second. America is better without them. That's a fact.

people actually care about an almost "racist" rock on land/deer lease not owned by Perry?... really?

damn , people are petty.
