From CNN:

American-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who preached terror as the public face of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, was killed Friday in Yemen, the nation's Defense Ministry said.
A Yemeni government official told CNN that an airstrike hit al-Awlaki's motorcade but gave no details about the operation or who conducted it.

This is a welcome development in the continuing fight against Al Qaeda. Mr. Awlaki was a legitimate military objective under the Laws of War. He was not a civilian. As when any other combatant is targeted, any airstrike that targeted Mr. Awlaki was lawful.

Another one bites the dust.

Let's hope this doesn't inspire further retaliation.

Good riddance to human trash.

Airstrikes. What a *****, unhonorable way to wage war.

Warfare isn't really about honor. "The Last Samurai" taught me that.

You should watch The 7 Samurai. Noble samuri defend a town from mercs. The price for their defense? A few meals of rice. The honorable win at the cost of a few samurai lives. The town ends up being the only one truly being victorious in the end. But the Samurai have their honor and did the right thing.

So the US extrajudicially assassinated one of its own citizens?

Trails and such are sort of an Old World Order thing. Get with the New World. Executions by the hands of the US Militairy is "in" this year.

Thunder said:
no, it doesn't. this ass was an enemy combatant helping the enemy in a foreign country. Obama's call was just & righteous.

The justification for the extrajudicial assassination of US citizens by their own government is irrelevant. If you want to support the dismantling of the US justice system for arbitrary martial law then go for it, but don't try to hide your obvious anti-freedom views.

Yes. The answer is yes. Even though assassinations are illegal (Executive Order 12333 - United States Intelligence Activities), President Bush still authorized them (U.S. military teams, intelligence deeply involved in aiding Yemen on strikes) and Obama continues it. This worries me as the US government's definition for terrorism can be quite vague (Rounding Up U.S. Citizens » Counterpunch: Tells the Facts, Names the Names), even going so far as to be peaceful protesters (http://www.aclu.org/pdfs/tmcterrorismmemo.pdf).

The target was not under US jurisdiction, nor was there any "martial law", arbitrary or otherwise. He was a designated military target.

Far better examples of government over-step would be Ruby Ridge and Waco, where I assume you concur.

In situations where arrest is near-impossible or would pose a monumental danger to our troops, extra-judicial execution is warranted, if the target is significant enough.

The target was a US citizen, and it does not matter what jurisdiction he was under as it was extrajudicial regardless (unless you can provide some information on his trial in Yemen?).

a traitor who seeks to murder as many American citizens as possible with the help of Islamic extremist terrorists was snuffed out in Yemen.

It's Miller time!!! :)

U.S.-Born Qaeda Leader Killed in Yemen

Damn good shooting! Hats off to our service members for smoking this bastard.

SANA, YemenAnwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who was a leading figure in Al Qaeda’s Yemen affiliate and was considered its most dangerous English-speaking propagandist and plotter, was killed in an American drone strike on his vehicle on Friday, officials in Washington and Yemen said. They said the strike also killed a radical American colleague who edited Al Qaeda’s online jihadist magazine and was traveling with Mr. Awlaki.
