In situations where arrest is near-impossible or would pose a monumental danger to our troops, extra-judicial execution is warranted, if the target is significant enough.

The target was not under US jurisdiction, nor was there any "martial law", arbitrary or otherwise. He was a designated military target.
The target was a US citizen, and it does not matter what jurisdiction he was under as it was extrajudicial regardless (unless you can provide some information on his trial in Yemen?).

U.S.-Born Qaeda Leader Killed in Yemen

Damn good shooting! Hats off to our service members for smoking this bastard.

SANA, YemenAnwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who was a leading figure in Al Qaeda’s Yemen affiliate and was considered its most dangerous English-speaking propagandist and plotter, was killed in an American drone strike on his vehicle on Friday, officials in Washington and Yemen said. They said the strike also killed a radical American colleague who edited Al Qaeda’s online jihadist magazine and was traveling with Mr. Awlaki.

I love the NSA. It's like having a secret fan-base you will never see, but they're there, watching everything you write and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that I may be some person's only form of unconstitutional entertainment one night.

If he's posing a threat to the country and it's impossible or too risky to try and capture him as he's in hostile territory then removing the threat by assassinating him is completely legitimate. I'd also say it falls under the right to self-defense as his existence is posing an active threat to the security of the nation and its people. That he is a citizen of the US doesn't change a thing.

If there is retaliation, the attackers position themselves in the open to be destroyed. That would basically make the killing of these two clowns a, "recon by fire".

Well, better late than never that you find out that dropping a bomb on someone is "extra-judicial". We call it "war" for short. Whether this person had at one time or another been a US citizen, or even still claimed to be one, was trumped by the fact that they were designated enemy on foreign soil.

Tell you what though. You get a gun, and you go over there, and you find one to arrest, and then return to justice.

No, our armed forces were defending the Constitution from enemies foreign and domestic.
