BBC News - Iraq makes first payment in deal to buy 18 US F-16s
Iraq has made the first payment in a deal to buy 18 US F-16 fighter jets worth a total of about $3bn (£1.9bn), the US state department has said. The planes, which are not expected to be delivered until next year, are to protect the country's air space.
There are currently some 44,000 US troops in Iraq, which are due to leave by the end of this year.
US and Iraqi officials said the purchase of the jets would provide the basis for Iraq's air sovereignty.
"The air force is considered a vital factor to protect Iraq's sovereignty and security against external threats," Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said.
"Iraq needs to build its air force and to depend on its own capabilities to defend the skies instead of asking other countries to do so - especially if we know that the US forces will leave at the end of this year."
Mr al-Dabbagh said $1.4bn has already been transferred as a partial payment.
Good idea? Bad Idea?

My concern is what happened in Iraq after the US helped them militarily in the 1980s.
President Reagan and the first President Bush both authorized providing Iraq with intelligence and logistical support, and okayed the sale of dual use items — those with military and civilian applications — that included chemicals and germs, even anthrax and bubonic plague. Iran is another example. The Iran Contra affair plus arms given to the nation before Khomeini came to power.

Logistical support?

What actually happened in the 80's is that we secretly armed the Iranians with advanced weaponry and the "logistical support" we gave them was actually a double-cross. We gave Iraq doctored spy satellite photos that showed Iranian divisions far to the north of where they really were deployed. Thus helping Iran capture the strategic Al-Faw peninsula from the Iraqis.

The idiotic left-wing meme that we supported Iraq in that war doesn't pass the laugh test.

Is that right? And who, pray tell, sold Saddam the chemical weapons that he used against the Iranians ... and the Kurds in his own country, for that matter?

Hint: it rhymes with Donald Feagan.

Ahh the "payback" has started... They cant keep power for a full 24 hours in the country but damn they do need F-16s to.. hmm...

And that is another complete lie that the left spread about the USA. It looks like you drank up that kool-aid. The fact of the matter is that the Iraqis had their own sophisticated indigenous chemical weapons program. They produced their chemical weapons themselves. They didn't buy them from anybody.

The crude defamatory lies that the left constantly spews about the USA disgusts me. It's just another lie like the one the left spread about USA inventing AIDS to kill Africans. It's downright treasonous.

Face reality, okay?

"(CBS) Newly released documents show that U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, played a leading role in building up Iraq's military in the 1980s when Iraq was using chemical weapons, a newspaper reports.

It was Rumsfeld, now defense secretary and then a special presidential envoy, whose December 1983 meeting with Saddam Hussein led to the normalization of ties between Washington and Baghdad, according to the Washington Post.

The cozy relationship was an effort to build a regional bulwark against America's enemies in Iran.

The newspaper says a review of a large tranche of government documents reveals that the administrations of President Reagan and the first President Bush both authorized providing Iraq with intelligence and logistical support, and okayed the sale of dual use items — those with military and civilian applications — that included chemicals and germs, even anthrax and bubonic plague."

The U.S. should not allow weaponry like this to be sold to other countries. Some people really can't see past dollar signs to look at the greater picture of the problems that can arise from this.
