Serve Time In Jail...Or In Church?

not in this case. in this case, there is NO secular alternative to jail-time.

Well let atheists be warned, then: don't do the crime if you don't want to be legally compelled to report to a church on a regular basis for a set period of time.

I don't pay taxes.

I haven't paid taxes in years.

Yes I file every year, but I'm part of the population who gets back more then we pay in, and shortly I'll be in a combat zone, so that's another tax-free year.

But how do I fee about your taxes supporting mosques? With this sort of program, I'm ok with it.
Of course you pay taxes, don't be ridiculous. You may not pay federal income tax but if you live in the U.S., you are paying state taxes (real estate taxes, sales taxes, etc...)

So how would you feel if your tax dollars went to support Muslim mosques?

Sure, and likewise let Christians be warned, since the precedence is now set, they could also have to do community service in areas their religion dictates is wrong. I think Christians should be able to be placed (as a choice or jail) doing community service at planned parenthood or an abortion clinic. That would be ok by you, right Jerry? Afterall, if they do the crime they should be prepared to do the time.

again, this would violate our Constitution, which you have sworn to protect & defend.

So you'd be ok with a staunch Catholic or something given the choice of Jail or community service at an abortion clinic?

So atheists are incapable of performing community service through a church? Is it that they melt in water and don't cast a reflection, or does god send thunder and lightning when an atheist steps on 501c3 property?

No one said they had to practice any religion. They broke a law and Big Bro is giving them the option of serving hours at a local church, probably close to their home and/or child's school, instead of jail. What's not to like?

What's not to like is that it provides a special status to religious organizations.

last I checked they don't commit infanticide at church. perhaps a better analogy would be community service at the local animal shelter killing puppies and kittens

No, I think something of equal affront to religious/non-religious belief is in order. Abortion, or Planned Parenthood (they don't do just abortion), or some gay rights activist thing, etc.

bolded: better analogy, since it doesn't require they assist with killing

If they work at Planned Parenthood, chances are they wouldn't be assisting with abortion.

quibble. they would be assisting with activities that lead to killing

Or counciling. So you don't want people forced to work at planned parenthood (where they would not be conducting or assisting abortion), but would be ok forcing Atheists to work for Churches, eh?

SD does not have a sales tax most of the year, and when it does, I get back from the state more then I pay. I don't own real-estate.

I know my tax situation, I'm telling you: I do not pay taxes.

again, this would violate our Constitution, which you have sworn to protect & defend.

1. It does not establish a national religion, nor does it give municipal authority to any church. This means it does not violate the Constitution.

2. My enlightenment oath does not authorize me to be a vigilantly. Exactly how I protect and defend the US constitution is determined by my chain or command, and so far I haven't been briefed on any missions involving domestic churches.

Sure.

Though I'm not Catholic, if those were my choices I would take jail given my strong opposition to abortion being abused as it is.

wrong. the 1st Amendment forbids govt. from recognizing an establishment of religion, be it a Church, Synagogue, Mosque, etc etc.

so clearly, this ruling violates the 1st Amendment.

how is attending service and listening to a sermon "working for the church"? what does it benefit the church to have this person sitting in their building? you are really reaching on this one.

How is mopping the floors at planned parenthood participating in abortion?

mopping the floors is a service that PP would otherwise have to pay someone to do. they benefit. so again....how does the church benefit from having this person sitting in their service?

Then they can sit there in planned parenthood without protesting.

yeah right. just as you guys squealed "they can't just sit in church and sleep, they have to answer questions about the service". do you seriously think that they would "sentence" someone to community service at PP and then just allow them to stand around and do nothing?

face it, you are off base on this line of reasoning.

however, if, repeat IF, all they had to do was go and stand or sit inside the building, BFD I'm sure they would probably rather do that than go to jail.
