BBC News - Turkey seizes Syrian ship with weapons - PM Erdogan
Turkey has seized a Syrian-flagged ship loaded with weapons, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

He did not say where or when the vessel was stopped, but vowed to confiscate any arms shipments for Syria coming through Turkish waters or airspace.

Mr Erdogan has repeatedly criticised Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over his government's violent crackdown on street protesters.

Last week, Mr Erdogan said the era of oppressive dictators was over.

I don't understand - Iran is hardly the leader of the Arab world. Sure, they do a lot of saber-rattling and denouncing the US and Israel, but they are not who the Arab world looks to for leadership.

Seems this guy wants to out Iran Iran and be the big leader of the Arab world.

well, that's SOP for this guy - he's been all about reinstituting the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire for a while now.

what's fascinating is that he has turned on Syria.

The irony being that neither Turkey nor Iran are Arab.

 which hasn't stopped either of them from trying to dominate that world, either now, or in past centuries.

A weapons blockade against Syria seems good to me. Smells like a UN reaction to the slaughtering of civilians. Does someone want the Syrian government to have more weapons? Who.

I wonder if he will reveal the origin of this shipment.

And? Most countries that existed prior to WW1 had tried to dominate the world at one stage.

You mean like a weapons blockade of Gaza to protect innocent Israelies that Turkey seems bent on challenging?

Perhaps Israel should escort a weapons shipment to Syria. I bet they have some old stuff from Lebanon; they could trade that (and maybe some gas) for missing soldiers. This peace stuff is all about timing.

Globally, many say the same of the US in recent history.

Well the US's aim in the Cold War was to influence the world against the USSR, so the argument could be made there that it was trying to dominate the world, ideologically rather than militarily though.

Assad knows there will be no intervention like we saw in Libya. Sadly, the pro-democracy protestors are on their own.

My thoughts and solidarity are with the Syrian people who are fighting for freedom, democracy and their human rights.

Lets build up weapons rather than debate because blowing people is always right.

/sarcasm random bs.

There is no wrong and right solution to either, but both sides haves the right to exist.

what of that 'aim' during the post cold war?

Iran. China. North Korea. Russia. I'll admit to not knowing how Hamas or AQ would come down on this - the Syrian regime has been a historical ally.

not really - most had tried to dominate their area. only a very small number have ever been able to expand their reach to the point where they could be said to be trying to dominate the world as they knew it. The Ottoman Empire.... yeah, I guess you could say that about them at their peak. Persia as well, though that was pre-Arab expansion.

obiligatory-left-wing-piety-box-checked (I would argue we have been too reticent). I'm not sure that is relevant.

Turkey and Iran are trying to dominate the world, what the hell???

not "the" world. "that" world. as in, the Middle East. Both powers see themselves as rightful regional hegemons.
