Obama Extends Cuba Embargo One Year
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/14/obama-extends-cuba-embarg_n_286154.html

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has extended the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba for one year, the White House said in a statement released on Monday.

The extension was expected and has been the practice of all U.S. presidents dating to the 1970s under a section of the so-called "Trading With the Enemy Act."

Obama extended the embargo even though he has made reaching out to old U.S. foes a key plank in his foreign policy.
There have been signs of a possible thaw in U.S.-Cuban ties since Raul Castro early last year took over as president from his ailing brother Fidel. Fidel Castro had held the post since heading the revolution that ousted the U.S.-backed Batista regime on Jan. 1, 1959
In order to end the embargo, the Congress specifically has to take action as required in the Helms-Burton Act. Once again President Obama signed an extension of the sanctions against the Castro brothers’ tyrannical military regime. They deserve it.

There is a chance for Obama to do a good thing he might be remembered for in a good way by ending the now meaningless embargo but he;s not smart enough to see that he could be a hero to all Cubans everywhere.

I would love to ne in a position to reunite all the Cubans who fled Fidel with those who have suffered, all these years.

Cuba is no threat to us any more.

The only problem was he missed adding the three zeros to the end of the time frame that the act should have been extended.

The embargo should stay until the political prisoners are released and elections occur. It's not a matter of Cuba being a threat to the US; why would anyone think so... seriously? Wait a minute. Someone believes the rationale behind the embargo is Cuba's threat to the US? Anyway, it's about dealing with a totalitarian regime. Sometimes economic relations are called for, sometimes diplomatic ones, treaties or war. It depends on the circumstance. In the case of Cuba, embargo will do, if we cannot invade and nation build. How about this... we invade, nation build and then make Cuba and Puerto Rico states (pending each's vote to do so).

Prisoners, eh? The USA has more prisoners per capita than any country on the planet. Could some of those be political? Invade Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, steal their oil, make them states, and make the sheiks USA taxpayers. Just plain dumb! Which version, yours or mine?

this i disagree with.

actually, many cubans would villify obama for ending the embargo. and now that cubans can fly to cuba legally from tampa, they already can see their families.

this i disagree with.

Of course you do. You see Cuba as the model for America's future. That's what the Liberal mentality is all about.

anything non personal to add? what good reason does the embargo serve now?

what good reason does the embargo serve now?

It serves to separate this nation from a bunch of disgusting wastes of flesh and oxygen, which is something we do not do often enough in this nation. Given the power, I'd embargo all goods from Canada, Europe, and China/Vietnam as well for the same reason.... We should not be doing business with Socialist/Communist governments.

agreed, it is time to end the embargo.

Im glad he kept the embargo...I was a teenager during the cuban crisis and I remember as it unfolded how Castro wanted Kruschev to nuke us...that was the purpose of allowing missile silos to be built in cuba, 90 miles from our coast....I remember Castros hateful rhetoric toward us....Unfortunately, the cuban people suffer also..

The real shame of all this...had castro had a pure heart when he overthrew battista and truly wanted to make cuba a great place...he could have easily done that by befriending us...could you imagine how cuba would prosper as a vacation spot only 90 miles from florida...it would have been at least like cancun...id bet even more prosperous

I see absolutely no benefit in the embargo. Cuba absolutely cannot be a player in the US/USSR conflict. Cuz, you know... there is no USSR. The Cold War is over. And there's no reason to keep letting what was essentially a penis measuring contest between people who are dead now to determine the future of US foreign relations.

Why? Why should we give aid and comfort to that type of government?
what are we accomplishing by it? they are not a threat to us, and the castro boys will soon be gone. also, think of the potential economic opp for the United States...

ALL FOREIGNERS are a potential threat to the United States. Ones who have embraced Socialism and/or Communism ESPECIALLY.

I'm a Nationalist and an Isolationist.... What exactly is it that Cuba has to offer US economically? NOTHING.

I think a calculation needs to be made...what harm is the embargo doing to freedom in Cuba? Perhaps a slight loosening of trade restrictions might foster industry, improve the economy, and lead to political change. I don't think that essentially mothballing the Cuban economy and preventing it from trading with the single largest economy in the world right next to it is doing anything to promote political change.

End the embargo. Or at least drop some restrictions on trade and travel.

lol...cuba is about as much of a threat to this country as my two cats....what do they offer economically? trade for one, which would probably create a few jobs i'm sure, ya know, put a few people to work....

Of course they cant anymore...mine is merely retribution, for damn near causing a nuclear war that would have killed untold numbers of americans.....why do scumbuckets always live on and on...

You've never smoked a cuban cigar have you?

Nope. Never smoked anything in my entire life. I also don't drink much alcohol and can honestly say I've never used illegal drugs either. I see no need for such things, ESPECIALLY when they come from outside the USA.

The embargo has been in place for nearly 50 years (with the exception of a couple years in the 1970s)...yet the Castros are still there. Even if you believe that Cuba's government is the embodiment of evil, and the righteous United States needs to do everything in its power to bring it down, you're still faced with the practical argument: the embargo obviously hasn't worked.

We could put a whole lot of people to work if we'd stop allowing our companies to send work overseas or allowing overseas companies to sell their products here to the detriment of American made products in the same market.

No, but the Cuban American vote is a threat to any politician who would dare to open trade with Cuba.

at least as long as the Castro brothers live, which probably won't be much longer anyway.

So you are quite certain that all the alcohol you have ever drank in your life was domestically produced? That must have taken a lot of effort. And I'm sorry that you haven't opened your palate to tastes from around the world. There's a plethora of good beer and hard liquor produced outside of Murka that you might enjoy.
