Im glad he kept the embargo...I was a teenager during the cuban crisis and I remember as it unfolded how Castro wanted Kruschev to nuke us...that was the purpose of allowing missile silos to be built in cuba, 90 miles from our coast....I remember Castros hateful rhetoric toward us....Unfortunately, the cuban people suffer also..
The real shame of all this...had castro had a pure heart when he overthrew battista and truly wanted to make cuba a great place...he could have easily done that by befriending us...could you imagine how cuba would prosper as a vacation spot only 90 miles from florida...it would have been at least like cancun...id bet even more prosperous

I see absolutely no benefit in the embargo. Cuba absolutely cannot be a player in the US/USSR conflict. Cuz, you know... there is no USSR. The Cold War is over. And there's no reason to keep letting what was essentially a penis measuring contest between people who are dead now to determine the future of US foreign relations.
Liberté. Égalité. Fraternité.
I think a calculation needs to be made...what harm is the embargo doing to freedom in Cuba? Perhaps a slight loosening of trade restrictions might foster industry, improve the economy, and lead to political change. I don't think that essentially mothballing the Cuban economy and preventing it from trading with the single largest economy in the world right next to it is doing anything to promote political change.
End the embargo. Or at least drop some restrictions on trade and travel.
