(AP) THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Clergy sex abuse victims upset that no high-ranking Roman Catholic leaders have been prosecuted for sheltering guilty priests have turned to the International Criminal Court, seeking an investigation of the pope and top Vatican cardinals for possible crimes against humanity. The Vatican called the move a "ludicrous publicity stunt."

The Center for Constitutional Rights, a New York-based nonprofit legal group, requested the inquiry Tuesday on behalf of the U.S.-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, arguing that the global church has maintained a "long-standing and pervasive system of sexual violence" despite promises to swiftly oust predators.

The Vatican's U.S. lawyer, Jeffrey Lena, called the complaint a "ludicrous publicity stunt and a misuse of international judicial processes" in a statement to The Associated Press.

Angel of Mercy. I hope they bury him It's about time the Catholic Church pays for these crimes.

It will never go anywhere. If the Catholic didn't pay for what it did in Spain, Portugal and Africa, it most certainly won't pay for this.

I'd like to see this investigation take place. It wouldn't surprise me if the pope himself has been involved in some sort of cover up. If so, I hope he ends up behind bars.

Based on his looks alone, I agree with the Seventh-Day Adventists.

This will one day come to head and maybe when it does there will be some fundamental changes in the Catholic Church that will put and end to those tenents and practices that has brought about an atmosphere that produces pedophiles and ultimately tried their level best to keep as much as possible under wraps.

I think it's a crying shame that that so many children were abused, but I am not sure that money is the answer.

I wonder if life long therapy might do more and better than throwing cash at every problem is the answer.

Still if in part punishment is the order of the day, we need have some punishment with teeth.

I believe that any Group, Religious or any other known to have supported any terrorist act, or organized cover up of any crime should be placed on probation for life and if it is repeated they need to have their Tax free status pulled of ever.

This would give them all Food of though.

You see I don't believe any Group such as Sharia Muslims, or Warren Jeffs Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are Religions at all.

One preaches hate a death as well as the subjugation of Woman the other is all abut organized Pedophilia, the Catholics fall right in there.

I believe this should include any Tax Exempt Group that promotes any HOAX in the public.

.

We have common ground here. Damned fine idea right there.

I actually support this! Any effort to "get" those that infllict this kind of abuse is ok with me; and, if it travels up to the Pope, then so be it!

This is a legal matter yes, but it is largely a Catholic matter that should be dealt with by Catholics. I see this action as just as much an effort to destroy the Church by people who have motives other than the good of the victims. Like money and hatred of religion. The impetus to fundamentally change the Catholic church with respect to this issue should come from rank and file Catholics. Not from some group who probably believes like you do that the Catholic church is "all about Pedophilia". I am very familiar with the problem both as a Catholic and one who has been personally afffected by it. I don't expect you to appreciate the good the Catholic church has done for the world. And I don't think the good it has done makes up for any of the sexual abuse that has gone on. But all of us who are Catholic shouldn't have to suffer for what these perpetrators have done to our church. That is just what you are suggesting. This is a very, very complicated issue that will not be solved by this action nor vindication given for all of those who have been victimized. In fact, it will hurt a lot of victims who still are members of the church and believe in it. It is hard believe I know, but there is such thing as forgiveness and reconciliation without a bunch of lawyers getting involved.

This is NOT a complicated issue....those who conspired to cover up crimes should be punished. And there isn't a shred of doubt that Ratzinger is one such.

No, they were left to deal with it the first time. (no pun intended) they blew it.

And as you know someone always takes it up the rear. That would be the powerless. It's always the same. A political thing. Eh?

Ummm no. We are talking violent rape. Last time I checked that was a felony. Hardly a "Catholic" problem.

Ballsy move. I hope it goes somewhere, but it won't. Too much international diplomatic baggage in putting the pope on trial. Still, I'd buy popcorn for such an event...

Violent rape? WTF are you talking about? We weren't talking about any specific crimes. Individuals who commit crimes should be punished for those crimes no matter who they are. Making claims that everyone from the top on down knew specifically what was going on and covered it up or condoned it or encourage it is another matter.

There's actually quite a bit of evidence against Ratzinger.

It's extremely hard for me to understand how any ethical person can worship or contribute to this pedophile ring.
