So, the postmaster general is begging congress to do something because they are running out of money...I am wondering why it is that congress needs to do something if that something does not include tax payer money in order for them to continue (as the pmg stated) Why can't HE just make the institutional changes that he seems to know will work?? I have a suspicion that the plea to congress was a underhanded attempt at some sort of bail out. (PMG) "We can do this by cutting the workforce in half and reducing delivery days and closing some post offices." (congress) "oh no we can't have that... here's $10b of tax payer money."

i fail to see why we can't just raise prices of services right now.

You could raise first class rates. More will switch to the internet. You could raise package rates and more would switch to UPS and Fed Ex.

not immediately. i still get bulk mail and still have to use the po services. fisrt class mail is an incredbile bargain right now and we could well afford to raise the raise on both bulk and first class. why not charge what it costs?

I fully believe that we should charge what it costs.......problem is, it's not going to fix the problem. Like has been said, if all you do is raise rates with no program to address costs, the Post Office is going to continue losing business.

oh, i agree with that. but that is something that takes a bit longer to address. seems gov't can't manage to do anything in a timely basis.

If anything, their prices or at least prices for service is already too high and that is why so many people and businesses use UPS or Fedex for packages. Just like so much else the government does, its not that more money needs to be invested, it simply needs to be run more efficiently.
