I have a crazy idea. Why don't we hold the person who actually made the mess responsible?

As someone who actually works in retail... Our floors are rubber and bright yellow, you can't always tell a floor is wet in our store. Just saying it's not always obvious. especially when the floor is just slick from mopping, and there isn't a puddle. That's why we always use a wet floor sign.

The consensus by some posters seems to be that a company can do whatever they want, keeping a store that is full of hazards, without being liable because "those stupid people should know better than to trip". By this line of reasoning, a store can be very unsafe and still be completely ok by their standards.

Also, remember that the court system is going to look at this. If they decide that the company had done some negligent like leaving a puddle around, then she can sue the store for being dangerous. If the puddle had been made 20 seconds ago, and an employee was on his way with a mop and sign, then it'll be thrown out because the company didn't do anything wrong, like leaving puddles around.
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet the Makeout Hobo, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

That's exactly what's happening here, Costco made the mess and they are being held responsible.

Sure thing..we'll have all companies hire legions of Mess Police investigators, so they can identify which employee or customer made a mess that made another person get injured so we can hold them responsible....GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, it shouldn't be too hard to find the employee who actually made the spill. But the person responsible is Costco.

Not enough cameras in the world to view every spot in every store a mess could be made....and cameras break...no we need the Mess Police...make them civil servants and public workers so they can make a livable wage

Messes happen in stores. Try to not WALK in them idiots. Why businesses should pay for such things is something I will never understand.

As for the whining from the judge about money. Meh, its part of society these days.
Are you familiar with the word ACCIDENT?
