53 Dead in Attack on Casino in Northern Mexico

When I saw this story my first thought was, "I wonder if these gun toting cartel members got any of there guns from the ATF sale of about 2,000 assault rifles."

What is really amazing to me is that I see and hear ads for Mexican vacations on TV and Radio.

How stupid it that. There is no way in hell I would cross the border for any reason.

I under stand that in 2010 over 34,000 people were killed by the drug cartels in Mexico.

They also love to kidnap Americans.

So do you think it's a good idea to go there?

How Thousands Of U.S. Guns Fuel Crime In Mexico : NPR
MONTERREY – Two dozen gunmen burst into a casino in northern Mexico on Thursday, doused it with gasoline and started a fire that trapped gamblers inside, killing 53 people and injuring a dozen more, authorities said. The fire at the Casino Royale in Monterrey, a city that has seen a surge in drug cartel-related violence, represented one of the deadliest attacks on an entertainment center in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels in late 2006.
"This is a night of sadness for Mexico," federal security spokesman Alejandro Poire said in a televised address. "These unspeakable acts of terror will not go unpunished."

The violence isn't everywhere in Mexico. This is like someone from Germany saying that they would never go to New York because of gang violence in East LA.

How sad is it that THAT was your "first thought"? In the wake of a tragedy you went to politics. Geeeezus.

I go several times a year: Puerto Peñasco, Baja, San Felipe and or Puerto Vallarta. The kidnapping of Americans is media BS. And when they do kidnap Americans it is usually naturalized Mexican-Americans. Therefore if you aren't a naturalized Mexican American, you aren't walking around flaunting you money, you use a bit of common sense and street smart you'll be fine and the good people of Mexico will be as gracious and welcoming as always.

Why is the Fast and Furious operation a political issue? Did Obama personally order the sales to go through?

I would think it would be a law enforcement issue.

I travel to Mexico several times a year on business, but mostly stay in the resorts. No problems there, and most of the violence thus far has been away from the tourism industry. My guess is that the cartels KNOW that if they start messing with the tourism then the Mexican Gov't would have no choice but to declare all out war on them. I think it's a tacit peace they have between them..

Considering the incredibly large difference in the sizes of these two countries/areas, that's a pretty bad analogy.

I'd go to Mexico again in a heartbeat. The scariest thing there is the way the cab drivers drive.

Typically...presidents get responsibility for things that happen on their watch. This president doesnt. That is irrelevant to the OP.
