Hurricane Irene: looking Like Major Disaster for Northeast

Overblown, overhyped, storm. Didn't even knock out power where I live. Of course totally liberal weather forecasters. They're just a bunch of worrying ninnies.

You must be talking about a different storm than the rest of us.

You don't care about Americans, so don't pretend to. The damages are nothing compared to other hurricanes, and the $billions won't be yours will they, foreigner.

Ahh showing your true colours yet again......pitty we cant call you what you really are on these boards... but oh well everyone can see it now..

It all seems a bit of an anti-climax.

Scroll down to 01:08pm for comment on the coverage...

" ...By Sunday morning NY1 TV station was reduced to warning us about the dangers of "slipping and falling." One anchor said: "It's going to be quite a challenge to work out what the heck is going on out there. Just because it's a puddle doesn't mean there isn't something else going on underneath it."

And here's the winner of "most ridiculous piece to camera" – a local Fox reporter delivering a live standup, covered in what turned out to be raw sewage. An appropriate metaphor, perhaps? ..."

Hurricane Irene hits New York

The media went way overboard in its attempts to sensationalize this. One of the most manipulate things I noticed was that CNN chose, of all places, the Allegria hotel in Long Beach to film. That was an interesting site to pick because just two weekends ago, the hotel flooded after a mere rainstorm.

I'm glad NY survived the 2' storm surge and 25 mph winds.

Pete, we don't need to call you what everyone already knows. Anyway, read the next few posts after yours.

Better to overestimate a storm than to underestimate it. Besides, the computer models were calling for some potentially devastating weather.

That looks more like some sort of squall line, not a hurricane. The fade into the heavy rain bands is gradual. If you were that close to the eyewall, there would be wind and rain everywhere.

I'm glad the east coast media outlets decided that this was more important than anything else. As soon as anything resembling bad weather starts happening to them, it is big news. When bad weather doesn't happen to them, expect less coverage and we should shut up and listen to more important things, like who married who this week.

First prize went to Tucker Barnes, a reporter for Fox 5, who went live from Ocean City, Maryland amid a strange, brown foamy substance. He reported that it “didn’t taste great” and had a “sandy consistency”. Apparently, it was raw sewage

LOL. To bad I missed that.

No question it was Less than expected for the Major cities.
Calling Good fortune/Better than could be predicted by the best experts everywhere "hype" tho... is spin.

Perhaps one factor, instead bouncing easily off Hateras, it went a little further into/onshore NC and VA and that took some steam out.
Hitting those states perhaps a little worse than expected.

Tonight tho, over 6 million people and businesses are without power.

Second post in this thread:

"Doesn't seem like it should be a huge problem for the NE. It's supposed to be down to a weak Cat 1 storm by then, at most. If it drags along the VA/MD shore it'll probably just be a tropical storm. Hopefully....

Outer banks should get a nice blow, though. Sure glad it missed S. Fla."

Just sayin'.... ;)

I would rather the media over hype something that could have been a massive tragic event than to underreport about it if it makes folks more aware. So it do not do damage they predicted that it may do-that is a good thing and it is better to think the worse in these kinds of cases than act as if it is not big deal. Esp if it saves lives. And do not forget this storm DID KILL people and folks are still without power. So for those of you saying it was no big whoop? Telll that to those that lost loved ones and/or have major damage and power loss. :(

Are you seriously trying to tell us that this hurricane wouldn't be around if Bush had signed Kyoto?
Wait...when was the Kyoto protocal created? 1997? And how many times did Clinton even submit Kyoto for a congressional vote? Does the Byrd amendment with regard to Kyoto sound even vaguely familiar???

That of course explains why Fake News was all over it.
