"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I don't think I support this. I don't want to proliferate violence and war throughout the world, and so I don't think we should be making it any easier for anyone to make war on anyone else by selling arms to them.

By withholding these aircraft from Taiwan, we make it easier for China to make war... on Taiwan.

China could wipe Taiwan off the map in the blink of an eye. The only reason they haven't is that they know they would have to answer to us. Selling a handful of fighter jets to Taiwan wouldn't change the defense equation one iota. But it might be a political headache.

If 2,000,000 people starve to death in China because of a glitch in their economy, do you think the, Chinese leaders will give a **** if their population is down to 1,306,313,812?

Their population is already too large. It would not matter to them
These people seem to forget the amount of commerce that existed between Germany and France at certain points in history...

In other words, you can't answer the question. The U.S. sells weapons to countries with poor human rights records and are dictatorships. It is in the long-term U.S. interest to foster responsible, democratic governments in the world. While Taiwan is a young democracy, it has strong democratic values today and it is something the people here do not want to lose.

This isn't true. Taiwan's defensive capabilities are not insignificant. The body of water sitting between Taiwan and China is also important from a defensive perspective.

Come on now. China spends about $115 billion a year on defense to Taiwan's $15 billion.

And just like what you guys did to Britain during the Suez Canal Crisis, in response to your disagreements on British and French involvement and the threat of soviet intervention, they could technically do the same thing...
I'm not being flippant. I understand your point. I'm not concerned. Shame on those who allowed the debt and shame on any of them that would allow China to dictate what we do.

Taiwan isn't going to declare war on China.
