Steve Jobs resigns.

That was my instant thought.

Ditto here. He needs to kick back now and concentrate on doing nothing but hanging out.

I wonder what Apple will do to replace him. Jobs is one of the few CEO's who actually was worth his pay.

Really? For selling an overpriced computer with an under supported operating system and creating tablet PC's that do not use flashplayer, one of the most universally used players on the internet? But hey, I don't have to worry about a virus on my overpriced, undersupported OS! Yay!!! That was actually an issue back in 1996. But with the invention of the free antivirus program, that issue has been all but halted.

In December 2009, Microsoft had 90% of the personal computer market share. Oh yea, he did WONDERS for Apple.

Combine the profit levels of Apple and its stock price, Jobs has done a wonderful job in creating wealth for Apples investors. As such his pay is certainly justified. The massive pay packages at the banks and how much money they have lost means those CEO's should be getting paid very little in comparison, but are in fact still getting rather nice compensation packages

Larger share on personal computer market. Lower on phones for example. Apple is worth more than Microsoft (market value). As CEO, he took Apple from a company that people were expecting to go bankrupt to be 2nd largest company (by market value) Apple Briefly Passes Exxon as World’s Largest Company - Businessweek - if his job as CEO was to make money for his shareholders, he's a smashing success.

Sad News.
To me, It means his health is dire.
Apple was his Baby.

AAPL stock lost 5% ($17½ Billion) of it's ($350 Bilion) market value on the News in After Hours trading.
(Microsoft's market Cap is $200 Bil)

I think you can safely credit him with creating $300 billion+ of that.
Oh, and the very rare Good Taste, as opposed to the numbing crap from Dell, HP, or ponderous OS's and reverse engineering of Microsoft.
Which is why is products sell.

Though I'm not an 'Apple Person', anyone who would deny his value as CEO is an idiot.
Not to mention all the profits and Good Will his products brought our country.

I wish I had some serious cash, I would buy alot of stock in Apple while it's lower than normal.

Wasn't it just a few months ago that Apple surpassed Exxon (albeit temporarily) as the most valuable corporation on the planet? Yeah, pretty bad track record.

AS much as I know Apple products are inferior and over priced, Jobs did a kick ass job.

I think his health has a lot to do with it.

My thought was his health too. I have always heard he has issues, but nobody seems to know what his condition is.

He had Pancreatic Cancer.. then a Liver Transplant.
His cancer may have metastasized into the liver and other organs prior to the transplant and may be back... again.
It's not good.

There comes a time in every ones life when they have reached a point where they can go no farther and they realize they have only so much time time left and they decide to hang it up and try to enjoy what time is left without the hubbub of business and the worry that comes from it.

I have been there and it's not an easy thing to face, but once you do that, everything becomes easier to live the next day.

I think Steve has come to that place in his life, and I respect his choice.

I wish him an easy transition to being a regular very rich guy.

I heard it's something to do with cancer, I hope he recovers, even evil geniuses are allowed to recover from cancer.

Pancreatic anything is very, very bad.

Agreed! I am no Apple fanboy that's for sure, their computer division is crap, unsupported, and massively overpriced, and they take, and have been taking advantage of their faithful for years. Back in 04 Apples stock was hovering around $40 bucks or so if memory serves. I bought about a thousand shares just for giggles.. Right after that they release the iPod, and their stock took off and never looked back. I got out a couple of years ago as I sensed that their good fortune was about to all come crumbling down. Well I was wrong about that, but I made a ton of cash off them.. :)

Jobs was a visionary I'll give him that. He saw a fledgling line (Tablet PC's) and turned it upside down. I agree that the iPad is a drink-coaster for business people and anyone serious about surfing the net, but he forced other OEM's to follow suit, and now we have a myriad of manufacturers producing much better tablets than the iPad. He took the MP3 business and revolutionized it with the iPOD, etc.. Apple's computer division still only appeals to a niche market of loyal users, but all the other segments under the Apple umbrella are innovative, and forward looking. He deserves credit for that, and Apple won't be the same without him.

Tim-

He held on too long. I wouldn't be surprised if he passed away soon. Not that I'm wishing for this, but look at the pictures in the post above mine.

He must be extremely ill to have given up his job.

Yeah unfortunately hes very sick....no cure for pancreatic cancer

Yeah, he's been having some really serious stuff going on health-wise for nearly a decade. Those pics are pretty worrying - looks like wasting. He hasn't announced what his current health problem is, but wasting like that means it's no laughing matter.

His job was probably insanely stressful and I hope he finds some sort of relief from his health problems now that he's stepped down.

There's a part of me that's with dontworrybehappy - I'm a Linux user. Desktop Linux has come a long way in the last few years, in terms of being usable for the average person who isn't a total computer geek. Everything has been dealt with except the gaming issue - which should be dealt with next year by Cubes Linux. Linux is very close to being perfect, and it blows both MS and Apple out of the water as far as I'm concerned.

I can't say I would ever buy a Mac product. Overpriced, undersupported, as he said, and I hate the "walled garden" thing. I really do. It defeats the entire purpose of communications technology.

But... as a CEO, Jobs did deliver to his shareholders, which is his primary job. That can't be denied. He was good at what he did - even if there are lots of reasons to hate the product.
