Part of me wants to laugh because you're joking. Part of me wants to hang my head because my wife had a professor who actually attempted to suggest that the monument was a racist symbol because the top plus the windows is meant to look like a klan hood....

    Sigh.

Yeah, th quake was definitely an unique experience

Here in California pay very little attention to quakes this size because they are pretty common, and the reports from the East are as if this was a huge event and the Washington Mounument may be leaningm and a number of builtings have been evaquated and snd no one is being aloud ro go back inside.

Buildings in the East were not built to the same standards they are here and they might have damage we might not see.
I feel pretty much the same way. 5.8 in Taiwan is not a big deal. Things pretty much continue as normal during and after anything below 6.5...

How does one stop short of actually suggesting?
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Can't be racist by itself. Maybe if there was a smaller black monument, brown monument, and yellow monument right next to it.....
