The FBI's "promising lead" in the D.B. Cooper skyjacking case has led to a man who died 10 years ago, an FBI spokesman said Monday.

FBI investigating 'promising lead' in D.B. Cooper skyjacking case

The FBI's "promising lead" in the D.B. Cooper skyjacking case has led to a man who died about 10 years ago, an FBI spokesman said Monday.

Special Agent Fred Gutt said the bureau's Seattle office has been investigating for more than a year a lead that has "more credibility and detail" than other tips regarding the unsolved skyjacking of a Seattle-bound flight on Thanksgiving Eve 1971.

Gutt declined to identify the man, who died of natural causes.

"There is a basic story that seems logical," Gutt said.

What is even worse is that they are still costing tax payers money after 40 years searching for him. Even their current info notes that he is dead. I don't see the point.

Sure it would be interesting but a better route wuold be to give the info to a private investigator to search out on his dime with the idea if he cracks it, the book deal will be worth a bunch.
 
don't get me wrong; i'm interested, and i think it's neat that the case is still being looked at, and i'll certainly follow the case.

however, for 200k, it doesn't seem worth it. some steal a lot more with no resulting investigations. i suppose DB needed a better lobbyist.

I admit I am interested too. I'd like to know how the hell he survived the crash and lived on a beach, how much money he actually made, and what he did after all that, what he learned, etc. They say he burned a lot of money to stay warm on the beach, and that is one reason they thought he was alive... burned money discovered
 
I think one of the reasons that it is still being investigated is due to the fact that most people didn't believe it was really likely for a person to jump out of a commercial airplane and survive, even with a parachute. That and the embarrassment thing. But that is a part of the embarrassment of it, since the FBI at the time probably believed the guy was a nutcase for asking for parachutes as part of his ransom. They probably thought, at the time, that there was very little chance that he would actually be able to pull off jumping out of the airplane and surviving. When there was evidence found that he probably did survive, it was a blow to the pride of the FBI that they would underestimate the plan.
