Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. House on Monday passed the debt-ceiling deal worked out by President Barack Obama and congressional leaders, sending it to the Senate for consideration a day before the deadline for the government to face possible default.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced his chamber will take up the measure at noon on Tuesday. No amendments will be allowed, and approval will require a super-majority of 60 votes in the 100-member Senate, Reid said.

On Monday, the House overcame opposition from liberal Democrats and tea party conservatives for ideologically different reasons to pass the measure by a 269-161 vote.
One of those supporting the plan was Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, who cast her first House vote since being shot in the head in an assassination attempt in January.
Giffords returns to emotional applause

In an emotional moment, Giffords entered the chamber during the vote and received a prolonged standing ovation from her colleagues. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi hugged Giffords as other House members mobbed her, and the commotion diverted attention from the ongoing vote total showing the measure would pass.

The agreement reached Sunday by President Barack Obama and congressional leaders from both parties calls for up to $2.4 trillion in savings over the next decade, raises the debt ceiling through the end of 2012 and establishes a special congressional committee to recommend long-term fiscal reforms.

Couple of thoughts here.

The Debt Ceiling needed to be raised, end of story. So hopefully the senate should pass the bill tommorow, way to leave it to the last second guys.

The deal is not the greatest thing in the world, its pretty pathetic. I think a better deal should be straightened out, however the can will be kicked down the road a little further, and we'll all have forgotten this whole thing by next week, after all, we have more important things to do.

Good to see Gabrielle Giffords back, her bravery in the face of adversity is an inspiration to us all.

This is the beginning of the end. Remember this day. The agreement does not solve the debt problem on the long run. In December politicians will be back in Washington, quarantined, trying to reach a new agreement.

Plus I can't imagine the US abiding one single year by these somewhat austere spending cuts (let alone one or two decades), since the country is always borrowing money for something. And a US that is going to remain on the sidelines in foreign policy is unimaginable. I have to see it to believe it. If it happens, another superpower will start sending troops (China? Russia? China and Russia together?) where the US will be forced to leave due to its lack of resources and funds. This is going to mark the beginning of a new world order. In my opinion, the debacle of the US is going to be steady and unstoppable.

The one good thing from this deal is that it won't have to be dealt with again until 2013. Yes, the republicans were successful in their hostage taking gambit ... for now. Meager spending cuts. No new revenue. But remember what happens next year? Those Bush tax cuts are set to expire again....

I think the Senate will pass the deal tomorrow - what is the alternative? I would have liked to see more of a tax revenue increase, instead of across the board spending cuts - we've never seen anything quite like this deal.... I'm a Reagan conservative who understands that sometimes tax revenue increases are needed. IMHO, the politicians in Washington no longer do the right thing - they just want to get re-elected. Do I support the deal at this point? I guess so, although I have mixed emotions at this point. Has the Tea Party gone crazy? Not necessarily, although the facts speak for themselves. Can anyone name the last time Congress proposed cutting spending this drastically? Thomas Friedman (whom I greatly respect) had an awesome article in the paper this past Sunday. His point was that a counter revolution is needed beyond description in the Republican Party right now. I completely agree with that.... I just think that Reagan and Bush Senior were right on this - SOMETIMES, tax revenue increases are necessary. I just wish the TEA Party felt the same way....

The Tea Party are just a bunch of wackos. The fact that the nation takes them seriously demonstrates how corrupt and decadent it (the nation) has become.

The tea party, like the 2010 midterms, is a bit like one of those magic eight balls. A conservative shakes it up, it produces a cryptic message, and the holder reads into it whatever he wanted the answer to be.

I have been predicting this would happen.. They'd do something in the last few minutes because NOBODY would want to take the blame if talks failed, so they shoved something through. It's BS. This is how our government works. Nobody wants to work with each other, so when it's a large bill, they'll never pass anything decent. Both parities just ****ing everything up as usual.

It's the beginning of the end of the US because instead of doing the impossible, they did some of what they could, and did not solve today a problem that doesn't have to be solved today.

No, the beginning of the end was just a little over 10 years ago...12/12/00, when the Supreme Court made a very bad decision, which resulted in our deficits going from almost nothing to $1.2T per year.
