I guess in some countries being a union boss can make you filthy rich even in a dirt poor country like Mexico.

Campaign puts Mexico teachers union leader back in spotlight - latimes.com

Reporting from Mexico City—
The most powerful woman in Mexico carries $5,000 Hermes purses and can make or break a presidency.

She's head of the nation's principal teachers union, the largest syndicate in Latin America, and once gave Hummers as gifts to loyal teachers.

Elba Esther Gordillo commands the patronage of more than 1.5 million teachers, and in election years, that means more than 1.5 million votes. Almost every political party courts her.

Yet scandal has forever dogged her, including accusations of illegal self-enrichment and even murder. No charges ever stuck, making her seem untouchable. Her union reportedly takes in millions in government money while she, once a humble teacher from Mexico's poorest south, lives much of the time in luxurious properties in Southern California.

Gordillo's critics say her extravagances during 22 years as union president might not be so bothersome if the state of education in Mexico were not so abysmal.

As am American living in Mexico I would seriously suggest you look at teachers' unions in the U.S. Teachers unions are the same everywhere. Corrupt, violent, totally lacking in any interest for the children. I wish their leaders would start getting arrested in both Mexico and the U.S.

I'm sure that living in mexico has made you an expert on both all things mexican and all things american

Now I'm going to stand in my garage for a few hours. When I'm done, I'll be an expert on auto mechanics and how to build a rocket ship

What an amazingly stupid post. Which union are you in? Never mind. Good-bye.

I accept your surrender

I agree with Patrick.

Why would you attack another poster for his opinion about a country he lives in when you don't know anything about what he is talking about?

Why don't you answer what he said instead of attacking him personally.

Patrick, I am also an American living in Mexico. Do you think Mexico is dirt poor?

Because appeals to authority are worthless propoganda. If you can't make an argument that stands on its' own merit, and need to claim superior knowledge, the claim is weak.

And there was nothing to argue. He simply stated his conclusion without any support aside from his living in Mexico. People who state their opinion as fact, with nothing to back it up but their anecdotal experience, are not looking for a discussion

What you don't understand is that corruption is not hidden here in Mexico. We know the people doing it and it is out in the open.

A lot of people have seen it first hand or have been involved in it.

You are assuming Patrick has no experience with the subject matter.

Why don't you ask him why he posted what he posted.

Yes, I know about mexican corruption. I objected to your appeal to authority.

And your experience in mexico, and the realities of mexico, do not mean that it is happening here in the US.

Your logic is flawed which is why I posted the "I'm gonna stand in my garage..." comment

Parts are as poor as Chicago and parts are even as poor as Detroit. According to the economic folks it's a large and growing economy.

Dirt poor for me when referring to a whole country would mean everywhere.

That is not the case in Mexico.
