Apple now has more cash to spend than the United States government.

Latest figures from the US Treasury Department show that the country has an operating cash balance of $73.7bn (£45.3bn).

Apple's most recent financial results put its reserves at $76.4bn. BBC

And it's not like Apple is the biggest US company out there.

That's cause we didn't send enough of the factories and productive aspects of the economy over seas... If we send the rest of the economy out of country that should fix the problems... Maybe getting further into debt will help, or how about we wage peace with more countries, that might help.

Yes, what is the story here? That Apple is good with money or that the government is poor with it.

The US government spends money like an angry wife, if Apple did the same it would also be broke.

I agree. If Apple spent money the way the US government does it would be broke.

I'm not someone who will turn this into a free market vs. government legislation debate like some posts above. I'll just say that it's amazing that a corporation can have that much money. The divide between have and have not has never been this vast in human history, given the proportions of materials and assets we are dealing with. It's something to remark at.

Also... what effect can government possibly have against companies with such economic power? It really makes me question who is in charge these days.

i wonder if we could learn anything from their crazy, radical, "spend less than you make" philosophy.......

See, if we'd just take that money from Apple, since they are being greedy, and spread it around to everyone we'd all be happy!

Actually this shows how much better Apple is in collecting its "taxes" than the US government :)

On top of that, Apple does not give massive rebates, give away the products or actually pay people to take their products... the US government does.

And it helps that Apple does not pay no where near the supposed 32% corporate tax rate that it is suppose to pay according to the GOP.

Now...how big is Apple vs the US government? IE how many programs does Apple offer vs the US government. (and no..I'm not talking about computer programs so don't need smart aleck remarks. ;) )

Why? They create something that many people want.

You do realize that the government works for Apple and not the other way around, right?

Also, their "charge absurd prices because consumers are easily swayed by marketing gimmicks and slick looks" philosophy.

Apple's products are quite pricey. it seems odd that they still have to utilize Chinese labor to manufacture them.

Apple does not manufacture the products with the probable except of the RISC chip it uses for its Ipad

I expect everything else is contracted out

So my initial reaction to this thread was, "How can we get Apple to spend or invest the money their holding on to?" aka stimulate the economy

that's my point. it seems that contracting out to Foxcon would not be necessary to make a profitable product in Apple's case. plus, hiring Americans would be great PR.

Apple is more Chinese than it is American... far more.

Yes: as a business their goal is to profit.
As a government the goal is to let other's benefit.

I just checked my wallet. I might have more cash than the U.S. government. At least, I haven't floated any loans with the Chinese or anyone else in the last 25 years.

I'm pretty sure they do most, if not all, of the designing in the States. That they do the low tech manufacturing overseas doesn't bother me in the least.

You're right, the govt gives away too much.

If only we could outsource our govt to the chinese.

I'm sure the rightwingers would love it once we explained that it was being done in the name of economic efficiency.
