Study finds Corporate America avoided $60B in taxes (2010)

What you failed to mention is that GE moved their factories because they get breaks on taxes, pollution, and labor costs. BUT, they still have their corporate offices and warehouses here in the states.

Don't raise their tax rate, make them pay their share by closing the loop holes that allows them to hide profits outside of the USA and enjoy the comforts of being a USA citizen. If GE wants to move overseas, they should move completely, but they need to take all of their company, everything, and let them enjoy the protection of the country that is give them the tax break. They should not be using my streets, my police, my military, my government, and the banks that federally insured to protect their assets. GE basically told me you cannot survive in my country because you are over taxed, they should LEAVE.

Hey, if a company chooses to relocate in from AZ to Mississippi, they take everything, and don't enjoy the protection from the state of AZ, and they don't continue being a burden on the infrastructure.

Nonesense...they paid zero taxs here on 15 billion...and the point you fail to grasp is they moved all the JOBS to china...you cant clean that up with bs

good point-lots of lefties are ambivalent to outright hateful of America.

I did more for my country in one tour than most will in their lifetime... there are alot of american takers thats what they do TAKE

How much tax was paid on the dividends earned by shareholders in the USA?
on incomes from salaries in the USA?

evil companies ship jobs overseas. let's make 'em do it even more; that'll show them!

Yeah, close the loop holes and stop their gov't contracts. Then they really leave, not pretent to leave, and they can stop being a tax burden , and quit living off the govenment tit.

These companies have the GOP and Dem's in their pocket. America is stupid for allowing it. Maybe, we should institute protectivism like the EU and China?

So explain to me how they are investing in the America by moving operations from the US to China?

you are missing the point. our companies are already international - we are already in a period of globalization.

let us say that Widgets Inc was founded by the US, and produces it's widgets in the US, but has operations and sales in 25 countries world-wide. Demand is increasing, and Widgets Inc. needs to build a new factory. The money to do this will come from their highly profitable world-wide sales.

now, if they try to bring that money back to the United States to build said factory, the government will immediately seize a third of it. They will face a 35% loss on their investment before they even lay one brick or sell one extra widget. But if they build overseas, then they don't lose a single penny. That first Widget can start paying down the cost of building the new factory, instead of paying down the cost of bringing that money back to the US.

Our idiotic tax code gives tells Widgets Inc that if they dare try to expand operations here in the US from the money they make overseas, they will face a stiff penalty. my argument is, maybe, considering our high unemployment, it would be better for all concerned if we stopped forcing companies to keep their earnings overseas?

So by investing in America, do you mean, have their corporation here, enjoy the protection of the USA, but operate outside the USA to increase their profits because the American work is paid more then the Chinese National?

yes and no. labor costs, you see, aren't just the "cost of labor", but the "cost of labor in units of productivity minus costs". For example, when comparing the Chinese worker who earns $5 a day for $15 of value added to the American worker who earns $100 a day for $2000 value added, the American is actually cheaper. the problem becomes, whether or not location in China (or Canada) becomes cheaper enough to make up for that loss in productivity.

To me that is not investing. Companies are outsourcing because of labor costs. If they could pay american workers dirt, they would stay here.

this is incorrect. Companies are outsourcing because of costs; and a good chunk of that is indeed the US Tax Code.

My point they reap the benefits, e.g. infrastructure, protections, gov't contracts, etc., and they don't still don't invest in America. High employment happened because Wall Street got drunk and we let them, then we bailed them out. GE was moving ops outside America before this occurred. Nice try.

they don't invest in America because we make it unprofitable to do so. and High Unemployment is happening because we ****ed up the recovery with a series of ill-conceived keynesian 'stimulus' programs.

you'll get no argument from me against tax code simplification. however, if you choose to increase the burden on business in this country, you will see powerful negative effects.

These companies have the GOP and Dem's in their pocket. America is stupid for allowing it. Maybe, we should institute protectivism like the EU and China?

no. that would be amazingly stupid.

If the red flag fits

No argument, so you throw out insults. Good defensive move.

Wow, share with me what sacrifices you have made. Good come back, someone disagrees with you and you call them a communist. So, I guess you are a facist? So, if the swastika fits, wear it is appropriate.

Share with us your definition of what it is to be american. Or, wait until Monday when Glenn Beck, Palin, or Rush, can assist you with your thought.

Listen turtle i could give a **** less what you paid in taxs and thats not doing squat for your country...the more you pay in taxs the more you made or took so stop whining
Going to school and being a professional student is NOT doing anything for your country thats taking...thats your country GIVING to you.

When the country had a military draft there was very conveniently slid in a college deferment...if you had a rich daddy and COULD AFFORD to go to college you didnt have to go to combat...how sweet is that...so what that breaks down to is...if you cant afford college than you go to war and possibly die, the ones that can afford it get to go sit on their ass for a few hours a day and go party all night....so I ask you again what have YOU DONE FOR YOUR COUNTRY that gives you this self righteous idea that you can stick it up everyones keister that has less than you just because your you and you think you can
Some gave some, some gave all....and alot gave NOTHING

good point, close the loop hole that allowed this to happen, and leave don't raise taxes. You enjoy the benefit of this country, you pay taxes. If I work as a consultant, and I am based out of the USA, and I travel to Europe and consult and but the profits of this job in a Swiss account, I have to report this income. If I don't, the IRS should be knocking on my door. If these companies use an illegal slip of the pen, then fine the f out of them and get the back taxes. If they were allowed to do this as the result of a loop hole then close it.

In AZ, they started enforcing the tax code, and it increased the budget, what a concept. If this is something the executive branch of the US is not enforcing, then let but this out there for all to see. Transparency.

I do this and do this and it seems to make no difference. GE did NOTHING illegal. They didn't illegally avoid paying their taxes (unlike Geithner). They simply followed the tax code as written. That is NOT a loophole.

no. I am arguing that our nominal tax rate is too high, and encourages them to waste massive amounts of resources in tax minimization strategies rather than maximizing production and expansion.

it is a worthy point to bring in the draft. Like those who pay taxes, those who were drafted were doing something "for the country", but they weren't exactly doing it out of willingness or a desire to help. They were doing it because it was the law.

volunteers, however, could be said to have done something willingly for the country, and could perhaps be compared with those (few) souls who contribute extra to the pay-down-the-debt-fund that the Treasury accepts donations for.

Such as? Have an example?

Of course it was. That's what they paid for.

I gave plenty of examples in my previous posts, it's as if you didn't even read it... and you just wrote a response like "those aren't tax loopholes." They are loopholes because the affects were not anticipated or what the IRS wanted to happen. Those credits were meant to help companies out, not lead to companies creating shell companies to avoid paying taxes all together. Smart people who study the tax code have found ways to get around paying taxes on money and getting credits for paying a single expense two or more times but funneling it through shell companies, which appear to be separate companies that have little to no taxable income. That is exactly why the IRS is actually creating new forms this year.

You have got to be joking, you think that you can tax business at a nominal rate of near 40% of their gross profit ??? You are a prime example of why a liberal could never make it in business.

I can't but to wonder if you even know what gross profit is.

Unfortunately, gross profit is a confusing word if you do not have a business or accounting background. Technically, gross profit is revenue less cost of revenue.... operating expenses are then deducted from gross profit to yield net income for interest and taxes (usually). My guess is the "lay" definition (what those not versed on business or accounting) would like of as gross profit. The tax deductions/loopholes, however, are the book/tax differences in various expenses, including depreciation, amortization and cost allocations that move costs domestically, but offshore revenue (and therefore profits). Its the 2nd set of books that cause the problem.

We should lower corporate tax rates to 25%, but eliminate many tax preferences and crack down on FISC/DISCs and other offshoring schemes. For business, tax simplification would very much be in our interest.
