The bottom line is that the republicans flat-out refuse to compromise and, AFAIK, there isn't a damned thing Obama OR Boner OR McConnell can do about it. Regardless of how this plays out, I think it's going to bite the republicans in the a$$ come the next election.
Americans voted in the republicans because they were unhappy with the economy and unemployment in particular, and because they were frustrated with the way DC was working. Now the republicans have literally paralyzed the government and everything they WANT to do would make the economy and unemployment worse -- not better.
While I don’t know that I agree with all of this, there are some points worth making.
1. If Boehner would stop dancing towards Obama then away that would help. He kinda pretends, leans toward Obama, then leaps away as soon as Obama moves to actually compromise with him. He then, however, doesn’t entirely support the conservatives’ actions in the HOR- he kinda edges towards them, as though to agree, but then leaps away towards Obama again. A little consistency would be nice.
2. Republicans essentially will either obliterate in the upcoming election if Obama plays the debt crisis wrong or be obliterated if he plays it right. That’s the way they’ve chosen to play their cards, and nothing anyone says at this point is likely to change that reality.
3. Voting in Republicans enough to control HOR but not enough to control the Senate, and obviously they don’t have the President, has been costly. They don’t have enough power to enact their own material, but they can stop anyone else from doing anything.
4. I do have to note that we don’t know that what conservatives would want to do would fail- just Republicans, who don’t represent true conservative politics. All they know how to do is repeat stereotyped jargon, the ideas of low spending, lower taxes, and nowadays conservative (evangelical Christian) morals. RP represents the only hope America has of experiencing actual conservative politics. Romney, Palin, Bachmann- they’re all just attention seeking idiots.
5. We don’t know that cutting spending and taxes would hurt because we’ve never tried. No president has successfully done both of those because of all the wars we’ve gotten into and such. We will only be able to do that if we pull out of every war we’re in (which would pretty much require the election of RP).
