There was a BBC documentary on Lemmy (you would be surprised at the hero-worship from major bands including Richards and Ozzy Osbourne for his alcohol and drugs lifestyle) last night and he has an absolute hatred for cocaine and heroin based substances. Winehouse struggled against cocaine and heroin apparently.

According to a BBC report, she had recently finished a rehab course so may have made the classic mistake of taking a dose that she would have been used to before her treatment.

It truly is a sad story and a path in life that is filled with nightmares, yet to perform with such talent and yet subdue to the heroin beast while performing is truly telling. That said, the monkey on Amy's back did eventually win, lastly being addicted to heroin is a life sentence.

I'm not sure where all these comments of "talent" are coming from. I only heard snippets, but I never heard anything amazing. It's like Lady Gaga. No, not talented, just hyped. Anyway, live fast and die young.

My heart goes out to her parents and all others who truly loved her, just for being Amy.

That said, her last album was really popular here and won genuine awards based on industry votes - not teenager tastes.

Since Keith Richards is still alive, I'm thinking we can ignore the idiocy that says this is cause and effect.

I'm not even a fan, obviously. But when people die at 27, it's shocking. When Heath Ledger died so young, it was heartbreaking. All that potential and talent; poof. Gone.

And some of us don't half love the people we particularly admire. I cried when Johnny Cash died. Of COURSE it was expected, so see how that doesn't work? I said "He won't last six months without June" and I was right. He didn't.

This is sad, but it's also not surprising. I heard that she had emphysema in her 20s because of all the drugs. I also didn't know she was only 27. She looks a lot older. I hope she has found peace finally.

One time working on a music video the entire production was held up for hours. Because the lead singer of the band met a chick the night before and dropped acid with her. And I just thought to myself, "you little dumbass punk. Not only are you screwing up an opportunity most people just dream of you are also screwing with all our (the production crew) lives and wasting a ton of money."

I know what you mean.... and I find it fascinating that she made into the music industry like she did. She was so addicted to drugs, how did she manage to accomplish a musical career? It seems like most musicians get on drugs worse once they have money and fame, but it seems like she was really well addicted before her success.

I saw some tour thing she had on HBO. That was enough. I do admit to being a bit of a musical snob having been a music major in college before. I tend to analyze music from a different perspective.

One of my classmates had an amazing natural inclination for singing jazz tunes. Great voice, solid performer. But she was built like an NFL lineman and refused to shave her chin whiskers/mustache. The music industry isn't going to pay for these kinds of people, and popular music is the biggest offenders of convincing people that their artists are "talented".

thats cool. Look, I am 62 years of age and grew up in the Sixties with all the crap that was there. I never did any drugs of any kind, did not even take a drink until I was 30 or so, and have about one of the most conservative lifestyles around. I have been married to the same woman for 40 years and my idea of a big night is to watch the Tigers on TV or pop in Lord of the Rings on the tube.

The idea that somebody could be young, gifted and talented and actually get the breaks to make it big time and then flush it down the toilet of life like so much crap is simply pathetic. its not heroic, or tragic, or even sad... its just pathetic and huge waste. I guess I am really cynical having seen this happened scores of times in the last decades.

One music major can't appreciate another? Gaga studied music at NYU.

I guess it comes down to different tastes, but being a bit of a music snob myself I think by pretty much any objective evaluation, Gaga is talented.

Perhaps talent should be in the eyes of the beholder and on the technical side should be judged by people with credentials such as yours. The bottom line is likability and the finished product, this is how talent will be judged and if appeals to the ear then IMO it's talent.

Now that makes sense - but have you seen Amy Winehouse? I can't see anybody ever calling her pretty. Adele is a big girl, but god the people love her. Lady Gaga didn't have to go for the gimmics. But she's another Madonna (who I also thought was a joke while she was popular but did her music stand the test of time or what?). I've hard Gaga sing exactly once. It took me from "wtf, who cares" to "Oh, okay. NOW I understand." I haven't heard another song of hers, I didn't seek her out like I did Adele, but I can see why she has a huge following.

No Winehouse wasn't pretty. But her gimmick was her tragic lifestyle. Gimmicks abound in pop music. Few ever admit it. I think KISS is the only band/artist I know that freely admits to being absolute whores.

My mom said she likes some of Lady Gaga's music which is kind of surprising. I think a lot of people have a Lady Gaga song they like. She's hard to ignore and her music is catchy. She is a lot better than Nicki Minja and she tries really hard to be different.

I never really liked KISS. I thought Marilyn Manson was all gimmicks too... Oh, and Snipknot. Those are middle aged guys hiding behind masks, but they had the formula down pat and made a lot of money doing it.
