Speaker Boehner has said that he wants to negotiate directly with the Senate leaders. Here is what the Washington Times has on this:

Significant disagreement remains in negotiations to roll back the nation’s debt, lawmakers said Friday, as the clock winds down toward an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the government’s borrowing limit and avoid default.

“There was no agreement — publicly, privately, never an agreement — and frankly, not close to an agreement,” the Ohio Republican said during a morning news briefing at the Capitol. “So I would just suggest it’s going to be a hot weekend here in Washington, D.C.”

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said House Republicans — who earlier this week passed their “Cap, Cut and Balance” budget bill that would significant cut government spending and raise the $14.29 trillion ceiling on federal debt – have done their part and shouldn’t be blamed for the impasse.

No debt deal as deadline looms - Washington Times

Speaker Boehner will be speaking at 7:15 PM EDT, which is any second now, to address the President's comments made an hour or so ago. In the address by President Obama, he stated that he wanted the 4 leaders of Congess in the White House tomorrow morning and he stated that he wants them to explain to him about why we do not have an agreement.

Uh, Mr. President, you can invite the leaders, but you cannot demand. You really need to learn that Congress is a co-equal branch of government to the Executive. They do not work for you.

According to Boehner there was an agreement on tax revenues of lowering brackets and decreasing # of brackets, but then yesterday the President added over $400 billion additional new taxes. He changed the deal at the last moment. It appears negotiating with the President is like negotiating with "a bowl of Jell-o." Those were Boehner's words.

Damn, Boehner said he would go to the WH tomorrow. Mistake!

I wonder if the jello comment was directed at Michelle?

Boehner never intended to agree to anything. His entire purpose is to hold the country ransom so he and his friends can keep getting their tax breaks.

What? Have you not read the above. There was an agreement with the President and Boehner and it included doing away with the tax cuts. Sheesh! The agreement was to have less brackets and lower rates per bracket and less deductions which would add revenue. It was the President, not Boehner who reneged on the deal.

It was a bad deal. And everyone knew it. Putting forth an awful deal does not entitle one to play the victim when it is rightfully rejected.

Why do the dems, who have created no plan, remain absolutely blameless?

LOL. The one term Marxist president Obama believes he is already the dictator of the United States. I think they should demand that he appear before Congress to explain why he is such a loser.

Whatever his motive let us hope he does not cave. But if he does he will no longer be the Speaker.

I hope he quietly tells the one term Marxist president Obama to take his tax hikes and shove them right up his, well, you know.

Not to be flippant, but can you spell B.S.?

Strictly politically speaking - he has to go.

This may be true, but he should have told the nation that the President apparently does not understand our form of government. Here is what Boehner should have said:

"President Obama apparently does not understand that the Congress is one of three co-equal branches. The Executive is also one of those co-equal branches. The Congress does not tell the President what he must do nor can the President tell us what we must do. I will be going to the White House tomorrow, not because he has incorrectly demanded us to do so, but only because we want to come to an agreement. He further demanded that we tell him why we do not have a deal. The Republican goal, this one last time, will be to see if the Democrats have decided to negotiate in good faith and will finally come to the table with their full offer. We don't believe that the President has been constructive in this agreement, but we will give him yet one more shot at it."

Sorry about the beginning of this video, but it isn't long. Speaker John Boehner's response today to President Obama:

.... now that's ironic. that is precisely the argument Boehner is making.

Again, the game must be played such that the last one to take the high road, or the last one to blink loses. Since politics is still being played here and both sides playing games, Boener cannot be that sarcastic. He has to show he's in control, in charge and at the same level as Obama or he loses (mostly in the MSM which will crucify him were he to say what you typed out). The bottom line is if Boener and Obama pass the Aug 2nd deadline there will be a price to pay for both. The House elections may turn the tide back to the Democrats but, Obama may also lose his bid for the 2nd term. This really is a big game of chicken and the way you win the game of chicken is be willing to never blink. Which is why this political cartoon is so absolutely true:

I still believe that Boehner should have said what I did above.

Why do the dems, who have created no plan, remain absolutely blameless?

The dems cannot create a plan because plans have to start in the house, which they have no control over.

As a side note, in response to the general thread, I think Boehner's move isn't going to work. He was getting a better deal out of Obama than he would be able to negotiating directly with the senate leadership. Obama had the advantage of the bully pulpit and has an interest in getting a deal done with the ability to play the mediator. The politicians in the house do not possess this ability and have a worse negotiating position politically speaking.

I'm certainly rooting for both sides to not flinch and let Aug 2nd go by the wayside without a short term or long term deal. Then we'd see after if you're right and Obama comes out on top.

Neither side wants to step up and make the difficult decisions that both know has to be made, at least not until after the election. Both sides want to try to paint the other side as being obstructionist. They have been playing political games, and will continue to do so.

Will they come to some sort of agreement before the government defaults and raises its interest payments to disastrous levels? Probably. Will they come up with a real long term solution? Possibly. Will they do so before the election? No way.

I must say. You have bigger balls than I do. I prefer not to risk the economy.

I disagree. I believe that the GOP [not all, just most] has always wanted limited government and Democrats want big government. This is not just fun and games. This is about a much bigger principle and that is what type of government should we have for the future.

Aug 2nd is a made up deadline.

And yet, when the Republicans were in power, they did not decrease the size of the federal government. When not in power, they make noises about wanting to cut back the size and power of the federal government. When they get in power, they don't do so. I think it is games, perhaps not fun, but games. As long as a gullible public actually believes that there is a party that wants to decrease the power of the federal government, then those games will go on.

I almost can't wait until all the parrots find out that August 2nd isn't actually a "made-up date."

President Obama and White House officials earnestly believed they were closing in on a deficit-reduction deal with only three remaining sticking points until Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) pulled the rug out from under them and walked away from the negotiating table late Friday afternoon, White House officials said Friday night.

As of Thursday, Obama and Boehner had been working on a grand bargain that would produce roughly $3 trillion in savings over 10 years, the officials confirmed. But talks broke down along three major differences: the two sides were $400 billion apart on taxes, Obama rejected a last minute demand from the GOP that the deal include a repeal of the individual mandate in healthcare reform, and the two sides were still haggling over a difference of $40 billion in cuts to Medicaid, according to the White House.
