'Gang of Six' revives hope for big deal in stalled debt-ceiling talks

Yeah, its far from ideal from a progressive perspective, but it also has to get passed through Congress. I don't see how a more liberal plan could make it through at this time, do you?

Honestly no. But it is always good to bring it to the public attention..

Democrats helped craft it and agreed to rate cuts in exchange for an elimination of many loopholes and deductions.

Actually, as I work for a 501(c)(3), this could be damaging to my career since deductions for charitable donations will be decreased. But I'm willing to take a hit if it means keeping our economy from collapsing a second time.

Does not mean the democrats will pass it with those tax rates

Yet we here nothing from Obama other than he will veto house GOP

Don't read the news much huh?

Obama Lauds 'Gang Of Six' Budget Plan

"At the White House moments ago, President Obama threw his support behind the efforts of a bi-partisan group of senators known as the "Gang of Six" who are crafting their own budget-reduction plan that includes spending cuts and revenue increases.

It is "broadly consistent with the approach that I've urged," Obama said.

As for the negotiations he's been involved in with Republican leaders from Congress, the president said there has been "some progress" in recent days, but that "we're now in the 11th hour" before a deal needs to be reached in order to give lawmakers time to pass a package before the Aug. 2 deadline when the government's "debt ceiling" expires.

It's time for Congressional leaders "to start talking turkey," Obama said."

So Obama supports the income tax cuts?

Yes, with the elimination of many tax loopholes and credits. Have you not read the framework he provided to the gang of 6? What do you do with these links we provide?

From the post you just responded to:

Stop that Obama had nothing to do with the gang of 6.

I've said this all along … this is the only power the republicans had to reduce spending, they were going to posture and refuse, until they got every cut they felt they could get, this gang of 6 bill reduces income tax paid by the top bracket … while allowing for some deductions to end, and gets immediate spending cuts into place … just for something as simple as .. raising the debt ceiling .. which was going to happen all along.

Next years budget will be another new ball game .. and we will be seeing even more cuts in spending while saying .. lets wait and see what this new tax structure will produce in increasing revenues, if more people are back to work, then the increase in revenue will be accredited to the new tax format … if there is a decrease in revenue, it can be blamed on the high unemployment rates

This is a much better plan for Republicans then Obama's was … it's front end loaded with tax cuts it's also front end loaded with spending cuts … While Obama's plan was front end loaded with tax increases, and rear end loaded with spending cuts.

I believe this is the best Republicans feel they can get at this time. The very best thing that could happen is for the Democratic controlled Senate to vote against this bill, then the blame will fall directly on their shoulders and no one elses. Passing this bill is a win win for Republicans.... it's not the end all …. but it's a start …. and the 2012 budget will be just as interesting a fight.

What budget? Obama has not had a budget his whole term as President I do not see him starting now

-chuckles- well you have a point there ..... but the blank check spending was taken away by the 2010 elections ... just try and think what that spending might have been with out the result of 2010 !!

Not completely Obama will still find ways around congress.

To be clear, you also support the gang of 6 proposal?

Glad Boehner could help you make up your mind. So you prefer leaving spending levels where they are now........Got it!

No I am for huge cuts. Especially to Planned parenthood and NPR and PBS. I also would like to see all subsidies gone. But that will not happen

The house plan is good because it calls for a balanced budget.

Obama does not want that because he has not had a budget his whole presidency

I'm new here, but can we ask for a "does not like" button?

You can ask for anything you want it does not mean you will get it.

Well there is no way you can get huge cuts without tax increases. Sorry Charlie!

The Senate will not pass ,and the President will not sign, the House bill as it doesn't address include any increases in revenue.

Just like there is no way the Dems can get revenue increases without spending cuts. For either side to get any of what it wants, there will have to be compromise.

If there is no compromise, then spending and taxes stay as they are now.

It is Obama and the dems that will not compromise. You do not need more taxes that is crap

Ain't it the truth! In reality though, a dislike button just seems to lead to further conflict. Only having a like button keeps things a bit more positive, even though its difficult to see sometimes. Or, at least that has been my experience on other forums.

Welcome to the forum! :sun

Thanks! You disproved your own assertion, all in the same post! Nothing for me to respond to here. :sun
