According to Bloomberg it is, unless you are a criminal, or a friend of the tyrant king, you can not have a gun.

you have no idea what you're talking about. I have several co-workers who own many firearms, and they are all NYC residents.

its relatively easy to get a rifle/shotgun permit...though a permit for a handgun is more tricky.

but again, my very average co-workers ALSO have handgun permits.

Tricky? near impossible. And forget about transporting it. :lamo

yes, it is near-impossible for certain types of individuals to get a handgun permit in NYC.

but like I said, my very average co-workers have them. Hell, one of them even has quite a long arrest record.

Re: I was beaten, taunted for being white, Bronx man says after subway attack Read m

Thank god it was a man and he just got beaten...if he was a woman and had been raped the three of you would've had all of hells fury descend upon you for obviously hating women, wanting to "punish" them for being slutty, and blaming the victim. Thankfully it was a man and he just got pummeled by others so its perfectly allowable and kosher to point out he made bad choices. So I guess we're lucky.

The guys that did the beating should be prosecuted at the fullest extent of the law. That being said, that extent should not include hate crime legislation. Someone committing a crime against you because of your race makes it no more of some special super duper crime than for any other reason. At most, the fact it was racially motivated should come into play when determining the sentence within the paramaters of guidelines for the actual crime that was committed, but it absolutely should not be some extra bit lopped no top like hate crime legislation esentially does now.
First, you're completely right about the woman and rape scenario. If any of us had said anything about the woman's behavior, we would have been sick misogynists. Oh well.

However, I disagree about hate crimes. Hate crimes have a greater societal impact than non-hate crimes and I think that impact should be considered in the law, particularly if our society is interested in ending the negative effects of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.

Yes, any civilian unless they are a shop keeper, and even then it's a circus.

Really? for felonies?

Tim-

jesus, has someone actually suggested that?

I have been the victim of black racism, and witnessed black racism against whites, time & time again.

anyone who says that blacks are incapable of racism, due to some BS about a lack of political and economic power, is a liar.

Im sorry Tim, I was just struggling to find a anybody who was claiming that there's no such thing as a black racist...

So thanks for that anyway, was most enlightening.

No actually, Tim just brought it up out nowhere for a reason that I have yet to find out.

err...none of my co-workers are "shop keepers".

they both have handguns. more than one. just average, Middle-class guys.

I will ask one tomorow, how long it took him to get his permit.

but I'll bet you that unless you are insane and a real danger to yourself or others, its not that difficult to get a handgun permit in NYC.

Why did you avoid my second question?

Where the crimes your friends were convicted of include felonies?

why did you fail to read my post?

I said ARRESTED...not convicted.

Actually you said:

but like I said, my very average co-workers have them. Hell, one of them even has quite a long arrest record.

having a "record" means conviction. :prof

Sounds like stupidity was the biggest factor here.

Dunno about that. Flip the scenario - a black guy gets robbed by 4 white guys, baited, he chased them into a white neighborhood, and got beaten again. Yes, still stupid - but the reaction and outcry would be decidedly different.

I don't think so, I think most people respond to such behavior similarly - although one time on this board I said if a black man taunted racists and got beaten, it was partially his fault and someone (I can't remember who) told me that I was an apologist or something similar. So maybe you're right, just not for me.

Re: I was beaten, taunted for being white, Bronx man says after subway attack Read m

no its not. did you even look this up or just "shoot from the hip"?

I know nothing about New York, but I do know that my home city of Chicago was a "gun-free" city when it was also the murder capital of the country numerous times in my life. How was that possible when hand guns were totally banned in Chciago from 1982 until 2010?

And despite the fact that the gun ban was enacted in 1982, murder rates increased until the mid 1990's, when they started dropping (but the drops were nationwide, and chicago's rate of decline was below average). Comparatively, Chicago still had one of the highets murder rates in the country for the entire duration of the gun ban.

How do you explain that?

Criminals don't care about gun laws?

Re: I was beaten, taunted for being white, Bronx man says after subway attack Read m

It's bad - generally speaking anytime someone is harassed adn beaten is bad. It is not *more bad* because he was white and *maybe* it was racially charged - because that belief (which is what hate crime legislation does) makes it worse to be beaten (or not as bad) depending on WHY the attack happened.

If someone attacked me and I don't know the motive - that hsould be no different than if they called me a certain name. Anyone - regardless of motive - should receive equal punishment.

Somewhere out there is someone who was attacked as well - in the same way - but the assailants just didn't psit out a few hateful slurs and *therefor* those assailants got off a little lighter.

Should they? Shouldn't everyone be punished equally for the ACTION of their crime - not their THOUGHT process?[/QUOTE]

Exactly. Hate crime legislation is nothing more than trying to prove what someone was thinking. If a white guy beats up a black man for messing with his wife, is it any more of a crime than had they both been white? What if they "investigated" and found out the guy was a racist? Will an attorney try to prove that the guy was more motivated by race than by the fact the guy screwed his wife?
In my opinion, a crime is a crime.

That's what you have to do for many crimes which is why there is a difference between first degree and second degree murder.

That was my only point.

"People started saying stupid little comments - cracker this, white boy this, f----t this," Fordell said. "I told them the only reason they were saying this is there was four of them and one of me."

"Fordell chased the men to the token booth downstairs, where two of them pummeled him while the others escaped with the bag."

Its comparable to a sitting president saying "bring it on" after a Terrorist attack!

its all real fun, games, and machismo.....until you're actually faced with taking another man's life.

I have a CC permit and have already caught someone breaking into my truck. They were held at gunpoint until police arrived. It's not a game, that's why you make sure you don't ever have the "you were killed" flash across your eyeballs in real life, because there is no "reset" button.

Exactly. If you hate whites and make it a point to attack every white person you see, that's pre-meditated. You deserve a harsher penalty than someone who gets into a fight and accidently kills a person.

What an utter failure of an analogy. It's nothing like that at all.

It isn't in scale, but it is in reaction and types of consequences to said reaction.
