Obama: Public is 'sold' on tax increases in a debt-ceiling deal

"The American people are sold," he said. "The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically."

Obama said 80 percent of Americans are on his side in the debate over what to include in the debt package. Voters are paying attention to "who seems to be trying to get something done," the president said. "It's going to be in the interests of everybody who wants to serve in this town to make sure they are on the right side of that impression."

    80% ?

    Really?

Come now, 80%? That's a hell of a platform for 2012 "80% of you want more taxes, so I'm gonna give em to you!"

I guess he was speaking off Teleprompter again.

As the Beltway politicians try to figure out how they will raise the debt ceiling and for how long, most voters oppose including tax hikes in the deal.
Just 34% think a tax hike should be included in any legislation to raise the debt ceiling. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 55% disagree and say it should not. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
There is a huge partisan divide on the question. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Democrats want a tax hike in the deal while 82% of Republicans do not. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, 35% favor a tax hike and 51% are opposed.

    Perhaps Obama polled welfare recipients...

LOL.. He's pressing for some kind of tax increase anything that is an actual increase becasue he knows that the republican campaigned and won the house back promising no taxes.. He needs soimething desperately to hit them come 2012..

To hell with what's good for the country, what matters is whether you can lull the public into giving up more of its property.

I actually think there is a lot of truth to this. I don't trust Obama further than I could throw him.

What we can trust him that he'd actually push for legislation after the debt limit is raised and the taxes are raised that will significantly cut spending. Why shouldn't we trust him? I mean, why should we think that 6 months later he'd just come around, say the situation is different, and not push for the spending cuts or push for a spending increase like stimulus.

Its not like 6 months ago he agreed to not raise taxes and leave them at the current rates only to turn around now and push to raise taxes again.

He needs to be able to hit the republicans over the head with a broken promise.. Increasing taxes is a perfect way to start..

If it were anymore obvious he'd have a t-shirt..

You can find quite a few polls for or against raising the debt ceiling and getting rid of tax loopholes and tax credits.

Opinions and interpretations are open: Obama's deficit proposal: A 'moderate Republican' plan? - The Week

Fact of the matter is, Republican leadership wanted this fight for spending cuts, they are getting their cuts, that still isn't enough and they are losing this fight now. McConnell candidly said recently this is hurting the Republican brand, and will destroy it if they do not allow the debt ceiling to rise. Basically McConnell, the leadership of the Republican senate has said that right now his biggest goal and by virtue the entire Republican party is not jobs, but it is to be against Obama at all times. He says this in fact, with much glee and pep. Seriously I give McConnell credit though, unlike most Republicans at least he has the balls to come out and say this is all one big game to him.

In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying ten percent of his salary, and that’s crazy." -Reagan

in military terminology we describe this as a "center of gravity". A center of gravity is that from which an opponent draws his strength - for example, if I have a poor defensive lined manned by conscripts, but an absolute 100% first rate massed artillery division behind them that you would have to fight through to get to that defensive line, then the artillery is my center of gravity. Even if you make no improvements to your own forces, if you can degrade / destroy / deny myy center of gravity, you improve my chances at victory.

Republicans Center of Gravity right now is their reputation as fiscal hawks. Obama needs to degrade it going into 2012 - that's why he's insisting on tax hikes.
