Gov. urges Oklahomans to pray for rain

You faith based people are comical. "sure....climate change has happened naturally throughout history. But what evidence do you have that today isnt actually caused by human beings?"

You science deniers are funny, always bringing up the same tired arguments that have been disproven years ago. Thanks for your personal opinion but I still choose to go with the peer reviewed science that has not been dissented by any scientific organization of national or international standing since 2007.

What the Science says:

"A common skeptic argument is that climate has changed naturally in the past, long before SUVs and coal-fired power plants, so therefore humans cannot be causing global warming now. Interestingly, the peer-reviewed research into past climate change comes to the opposite conclusion. To understand this, first you have to ask why climate has changed in the past. It doesn't happen by magic. Climate changes when it’s forced to change. When our planet suffers an energy imbalance and gains or loses heat, global temperature changes.

There are a number of different forces which can influence the Earth’s climate. When the sun gets brighter, the planet receives more energy and warms. When volcanoes erupt, they emit particles into the atmosphere which reflect sunlight, and the planet cools. When there are more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the planet warms. These effects are referred to as external forcings because by changing the planet's energy balance, they force climate to change.

It is obviously true that past climate change was caused by natural forcings. However, to argue that this means we can’t cause climate change is like arguing that humans can’t start bushfires because in the past they’ve happened naturally. Greenhouse gas increases have caused climate change many times in Earth’s history, and we are now adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere at a increasingly rapid rate.

Looking at the past gives us insight into how our climate responds to external forcings. Using ice cores, for instance, we can work out the degree of past temperature change, the level of solar activity, and the amount of greenhouse gases and volcanic dust in the atmosphere. From this, we can determine how temperature has changed due to past energy imbalances. What we have found, looking at many different periods and timescales in Earth's history, is that when the Earth gains heat, positive feedbacks amplify the warming. This is why we've experienced such dramatic changes in temperature in the past. Our climate is highly sensitive to changes in heat. We can even quantify this: when you include positive feedbacks, a doubling of CO2 causes a warming of around 3°C.

What does that mean for today? Rising greenhouse gas levels are an external forcing, which has caused climate changes many times in Earth's history. They're causing an energy imbalance and the planet is building up heat. From Earth's history, we know that positive feedbacks will amplify the greenhouse warming. So past climate change doesn't tell us that humans can't influence climate; on the contrary, it tells us that climate is highly sensitive to the greenhouse warming we're now causing."

What does past climate change tell us about global warming?

theres nothing really wrong with asking people to pray for rain, its just a typical stupid over the top christian conservative (borderline offensive) thing to say. nothing surprising here.

I don't understand how this is christian at all.

He said of all faiths, and higher power.

Do Muslims believe in a higher power? Do they Pray?
Do Jews believe in a higher power? Do they Pray?
Do Hindu folks believe in a higher power? Do they Pray?

Oklahoma Dustbowl...drought of 1932. Oklahoma drought of 2011. OMIGOSH. Droughts and climate change which has natural occurred since the beginning of time has suddenly STOPPED occurring naturally! We must dump hundreds of billions into more climate research!!! :lamo

Ummm...you DO know what a drought is right? And that they have occurred naturally in every part of the world? Since like...forever? Nah...you aren't dependent on 'faith'...

Same lame retort as last time??? Still going with your brush fire reasoning? I've already provided peer-reviewed science in rebuttal to your personal opinion. Can't you even come up with something half-way scientific to make a point about to make your post seem even semi-credible?

You do know what a brush fire is, right? You realize that man starts brush fires too, even though they were historically started by nature?

Yes...the same lame retort to the same mindless...THIS time...by golly THIS time it must be MANMADE!!! We dont care that climate change and drought is a historical occurrence...THIS time...blame the humans!!! :lamo

Every time you post there is like circus music going off in the background.

Thanks for the same personal opinion you posted last time. Meanwhile in the peer-reviewed scientific world:

State of the Climate
Global Analysis

June 2011

"Global Highlights

* The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for June 2011 was the seventh warmest on record at 16.54°C (60.94°F), which is 0.58°C (1.04°F) above the 20th century average of 15.5°C (59.9°F).

* June 2011 was the 316th consecutive month with a global temperature above the 20th century average. The last month with below-average temperature was February 1985.

* The June worldwide average land surface temperature was 0.89°C (1.60°F) above the 20th century average of 13.3°C (55.9°F)—the fourth warmest on record.

* The global average ocean surface temperature was the 10th warmest June on record, at 0.47°C (0.85°F) above average. Neither El Niño nor La Niña conditions were present during June 2011. According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, these ENSO-neutral conditions are expected to continue into the Northern Hemisphere fall 2011.

* The first half of 2011 (January–June) was the 11th warmest on record for the combined global land and ocean surface temperature. Separately, the worldwide average ocean temperature was also the 11th warmest January–June and the worldwide average land temperature was the 12th warmest such period."

"Direct observations find that CO2 is rising sharply due to human activity. Satellite and surface measurements find less energy is escaping to space at CO2 absorption wavelengths. Ocean and surface temperature measurements find the planet continues to accumulate heat. This gives a line of empirical evidence that human CO2 emissions are causing global warming."

Empirical evidence that humans are causing global warming

'Massive heat wave' on way; Okla. tries prayer - Weather - msnbc.com

In the thick of the heat wave is Oklahoma where Gov. Mary Fallin asked Oklahomans to pray for rain this Sunday.

"The power of prayer is a wonderful thing, and I would ask every Oklahoman to look to a greater power this weekend and ask for rain," Fallin said in a news release on Thursday.
Fallin on Thursday also issued a ban on outdoor burning for the western half of the state because of the extreme drought conditions.

---
Prayer does not work, never has, never will. There is ZERO scientific evidence. it only give people that warm fuzzy feeling.

Pretty sad that topics like this pop up when there are more important things to talk about. But hey, you go right ahead and mock other peoples beliefs. Just don't be surprised/offended if others mock you for yours.

I don't see what the big deal is. Prayer has as much chance of changing the weather out there as anything else they could do.

Im really not interested in yet another mindless charade ala 'AGW climate change." I dont know of too many people who dont recognize climate change as a basic scientific reality and occurence that has occurred throughout recroded history and across the globe. I just like to point out how stupid these faith based individuals are when they claim any and every naturally occuring event is caused by 'global warming'. Their gods have trained their puppets well!

I didnt realize that people of faith believe in global warming because of said faith. Im not really sure what one has to do with the other. Maybe im just odd.

An acting Governor whether in Texas or Oklahoma should not use the power of their office to promote religion. This includes asking people to pray for rain or attend a prayer rally.

Nobody is promoting a religion and nobody is forcing anyone to pray. Lighten up people.

No. He needs to open a can of STFU and keep the religious comments to himself.

People that blindly accept anything they are spoon fed regarding AGW regardless of the number of times things change or the people are caught in outright lies and dishonest procedures are 'true believers'. They justify and defned before the actual defense comes out. They believe man must be causing climate change because it fits with their ideology and anyone that doesnt buy into their bull**** is a heretic. Just like the fact that even thought the GLOBE and in particular this region has throughout history experienced far WORSE droughts, Oklahomas current woes must be man made. True believers baby...

You are talking about Obama...right? I agree...that ****ing cretin actually made religous comments and offered prayers at the national prayer breakfast. Im glad to see so many liberals are finally seeing him for what he is. But oh...how you must despise him so...

Wait...thats not cuz he is black is it? You racist...

gotcha. I was misreading...err well misinterpreting what you meant.

Or you can close a can and mind your own buisness. And since he has freedom of speech on his side that would be the smartest thing you could do.

Ask ANY doctor and they will tell you the same things. They see things they simply cant explain. Call it luck, call it a miracle, call it whatever you like.

This is a logical contradiction. You're basically saying, "I can't explain it, therefore I can explain it." If something is unexplained it's just unexplained, it doesn't automatically mean that God did it, or that prayer caused it.

To be true...the rely first and foremost on the skills they developed over time. However, if you dont think science based individuals dont routinely engage in prayer for skill greater than that which they posess, you know no doctors.

I don't think I ever made the argument that doctors do not pray. Can you point out where I did?

I'm saying that there is no credible evidence that prayer has any causal effect over placebo.

And you REALLY dont think you and others are ridiculing others beliefs? Funny...we have this whole thread...and several others just like it...

That may not be your intent...yet...here you are. Its kinda like going up to someone enjoying a meal which you dont like and then feeling the need to exclaim..."ewwww...you are going to eat that? It tastes like ****!"

You should read my statements more carefully, I said...

I'm not ridiculing anyone for their beliefs.

I do ridicule people's beliefs, but I'm not ridiculing them. Though you hold your beliefs to be sacred, I do not. I don't think that just because someone holds their ideas to be sacred that they should be immune to criticism and analysis.

Do you?

So the governor can ask those so inclined to consider prayer. Indians can do a rain dance. Those NOT inclined can...well...

He's using his office to advance religion, which is against the 1st amendment of the constitution.

The lawsuit brought against him says...

Perry's promotion of the rally violates "the Establishment Clause by giving the appearance that the government prefers evangelical Christian religious beliefs over other religious beliefs and non-beliefs ..."

He needs a secular reason for this prayer rally and "giving SOME people warm fuzzies" (at the cost of other people's religious freedom) doesn't count.

Even if it did, it's primary purpose is to advance religion... which is the second part of the lemon test in which this incident fails.

See my above comments about Obama and democrats that dare to discuss prayer...hammer away and party on. ****ing worthless corrupt democrats and their idiotic attempts to inject religion into America. You gotta hate em. Your turn...go...cuz...i know its really bothering you...lambaste the POS inquisitor in chief...

So... just so I understand...

Your attempt to refute my argument is to say that Obama is guilty of prayer as well?

m'kay...

For the record, it's unconstitutional when Obama does it too.

Now what?

No...stay with the class...my point is simply this...people like you and the OP never say ****-all when it is a democrat. You dont even get revved up over it. unless it is a republican...which makes you world class hypocrites. That people lose their minds when someone does something as simple as requesting that those so inclined offer a prayer for the end to the drught....again...speaks volumes about the 'tolerance' of certain folk. fit yourself comfortably in there anywhere you like.

There may be people that make this party line distinction, but I did not.

Republican, Democrat, other... doesn't matter to me. If you use your office to promote an event whose sole purpose is to promote religion or a specific religion over another specific religion or non-religion... you're in violation of the establishment clause.

Complaints? Can you be specific? What complaint?

Also, could you be more specific on where you think I'm wrong.

It's a bit difficult for me to respond to a baseless assertion.
